TIME FIXED FOR CONVENTION
Democratic Executive Committee;
Holds its Meeting?Clubs and
Counties Called.
Columbia 'State, lSlli.
The iState democratic executive
committee ait the mooting last night
fixed Hie time for holding the State
convention for May 20, (he county
conventions for May 4, and the precinct
clubs for April 25. This was
the main reason for the meeting, although
one or two other resolutions
introduced were discussed. At the precinct
or club meetings delegates will
bo elected to the county conventions
and when the County conventions are
assembled delegates to itlie State convention
will be elected, each eountv ,
being entitled to twice Ihe numibor of!
represent!!lives in the general assembly.
There was a very full attendance
when rlie mealing was called to order
and as soon as the dates for the convent
ion were fixed Mr. Cole L.
Blcase brought up a resolution recommending
to the convention the change
in the constitution! of the party si
that the first primary might be held
on the third Saturday in August instead
of the foiuith Tuesday as at
present. Mr. Blcase stated that he
had heard of a number of case.where
mail operatives were not allowed
to get off on Tuesday i?i order to
vote and it was customary in Mic
mills -to give the operatives a half
holiday on .Saturday. This applied
particularly to Kichlatul county, lie
said. The resolution was opposed on
tiie :.'i:>und that at would delay the
returns. It we* finally tabled.
There is as a mailer of fac t no connection
between this committee and
the next State convention and suoli
a resolution would be merely a suggest
i. n.
Resolutions of thanks were introduced
Chairman Jone> a"d his assistants,
Messrs. J. I). Hell and J. W.
I?. Pope and adopted unanimously.
Mr. 1?, IT. Jay ires offered the following
resolution, which was adopted:
"Whereas the business of thU
meeling is the last official duty to be
transacted by this committee as at
present consti'tuted. and whereas the
"Democracy of Sculh Carolina is soon
to 'enter as an active participant into
a regular national election, and whereas
many questions of nationwide importance
and of vital interest to humanity
.will bo submitted to the nati'o.i
for solution;
*' Therefore be it resolved. That
wi;h an abiding faith the business
ability and breadiMi of south Carolina.we
confidently look forwaid to conservative
and positive action on all
questions which may be reviewed by
the etming convention an 1 also bespeak
a most liberal attitude towards
each and every business interest of
the whole nation." 8
