'OARD FROM MR. PARKER. j c ^ I Statement In Anskwor to Senator j I Bloase in Regard to Testimony Beforo Dispensary Ooninxis- I sion. c Please pardon a few words in an- * jfi swer to Senator Cole L. Blease in his !1 li recent remarks in the Stato senate 1 with reference to my testimony be- * J t fore the winding up commission. 11 The absurdity of the charge of 1 1 conspiracy as made l>y Mr. HI ease N Iinust be apparent, but there may be ( some conditions not understood by * all. Neither Capt. Smytlre nor my- c sel'f was a supporter of Gov. Ansel in 11 the recent campaign. For myself, thoug/l 1 had (he highest personal'regard for him, I differed with him on a the issues of Ihe campaign and vot- J ed for another. I I have never had a communication with him or any one else referred to by Mr. Blease with reference to my testimony, except with Mr. Avery 1 j|| Putton, to whom, after having been x '0- subpoenaed as a witness before the ' &|| winding up commission, I wrote on > HI Dec. 30, urging him "mil again to j j put me to the humiliation of appear-! ing in a matter about which 1 know ' practically nothing." To this letter j Ppa; 1 never had a reply and bad not j seen Mr. Pallon until 1 appeared be- I fore the commission a few days since. Did Not Wait? Was Forced. J, Mr. Blease asks the question why I 1 waited until after Mr. Lanahan's ( death to answer the question as to P who Mr. Lanahan had told me was c was representing him in South Car- ' olina. I agree with <hiin that it. was . unfortunate that the answer had to t be made subsequent to Mr. Lanahan's Jl death, but I had no choice in the matter. , [ * 1 i No one knows .better than Mr. r Blease why the question was not an- 1 swered two years ago at the time of ] the hearing before the legislative { committee, in June, 100(5. : ' By Mr. Blease's Own Vote. ' 1 It was upon Mr. Blease's own mo-j lion and by lite ell'ect of his own vote j i that 1 was excused from answering l the question at that time, against the j earnest protest of Air. Ijyon, now c attorney general, and two other c (members of the investigating com- 1 I mi t toe. j ' Having been excused by the inves- " tigating committee from afswering ISl .the question then, it certainly would have been improper and inconsistent * for me subsequently Jo have rushed into print, to make public statements ^ , j which I had asked Ihe legislative committee to excuse me from mak. i ing (before them. . Having been excused then from disclosing the personage referred to t by Mr. Lanahan, I was not called up- I on to note any denial by him that t (Mr. Blease was the person referred i?. II will be noted, however, that Mr. | Lanahan never denied any part of ' the conversations referred to by me in my testimony. Tie merely denied that, be had told me that Mr. Blease represented him, which at that: time I had not testified lo before the committee, .because, as stated, I had been 'excused. Says Blease Knew of It. <Mr. Bl'ease certainly surprises me, however, in his statement to the effect 11 ia( he had no idea that T had ? referred to him in my statements be- j fore the investigating committee. \ When T testified in June. .1000, Mr. Lanahan had been advised of my having been subpoeaned and of the nee- j essilv of my testifying lo my conver- .. sat ion with him if t he court decreed that ;T should do so; furthermore, the attorneys representing Mr. IT. II. 6 "Evans had been advised before I tcs- c titled of the purport of my testimony. As (he intimacy between Mr. f Blease -and Mr. Evans was Avell known, T had presumed that it had iheen communicated (o Mr. Blease ? Achat my testimony would be. < (This presumption was confirmed f in my own mind by statements of { iMr. Blease lo me. On Ihe evening of ? my testimony, whilst Mr. Itaynesworth and T were supping together s at Wright 's hotel, Mr. Blease, who r had been taking supper at a table some distance away, slopped at our c tnlble a moment, and, after expressing his approval of the position I had ! (taken with reference to testifying, . said in effect that he was familiar with all the facts with regard to the 11 employment of Ihe party referred to by me by Mr. Lanahan; that' lie had J no apologies to 'make to any one for voting to excuso me from giving the name, but thai in .justice to Ihe party referred lo, he wanted Jo say that f thai parly had nol understood fully the service 'expected of him when ho i * accepted Ihe employment, and when1' lie did learn what was expected, he declined to serve further, a:ul rci / * 'oivod loss than .$200 for liis compensation. Diplomatic Acknowledgment. L understood tlio statement of Mr. Mease to be a diplomatic acknowledgment of his connection with the natter, and, as expressed in legal 'Orins, "a ple? of confession and Lvoidance." Mr. Bloaso now denies hat he had any connection with Mr. janahan. 1 may add that 1 am advisqd by dr. A\ in. Klliott of Columbia, who vas also my attorney in the proeedings before the supreme court, "at Mr. Bloaso made to him p radially (ho same statement ar> made I'hove. A Challenge to Blease. Tn justice to Mr. Blease himself, ind in justice to the memory of Mr. janahan, Mr. Blease is now, it seems o me, called upon to say who was ho "high .State official" whom Mr. Janahan employed, as he has ac;nowlod?-cd full acquaintanceship in lio matter. Whilst I can not con"oive that 1 liave hcen mistaken as o statements made to me by Mr. janahan, still if tlicro be error in vlial Mr. Laiiahan slated to in.-. Mr. Mease can clear it, and should do so. Lewis W. Parker. (ireonville, S.
