KILLED BY CONVICT.
W. A. Clyde Shot By a Negro Who
Escaped Two Months Ago?Another
Citizen Assaulted.

'Sumter, Jan. 21.?Policeman Win,
A. Cly.de of this city was shot and
killed' last night about .12 o'clock
by Toney Moses, colored, an escaped
convict, near Bossards, Sumter
county. The now& 0f this deplorable
tragedy was not known iby the newspaper
correspondents of this city until
this morning.
Moses escaped about two months
ago from the Sumter chaingang. lie
was located last ivig'hl'at^a house tieai
Bossards. Officer Clyde and Constable
Nunnamnker went out to capture him.

house and demanded admittance. Mr
!. Clyde went to one door a id Mr. Nunnamaker
to another door. Mr. Clydv

Moses under a bed. He called upon

Mows' reply was a shot from a shot
gun, which look effect in Mr. Clyde't
abdomen. The popular and efficienl
officer succumbed to flic, terrible
wound within' a few hours after, ex
hihiting rare fortitude and forbear
ance. Mr. Nunnamaker went to thv
assistance of his injured brother of
ficer and medical assistance was se
cured as soon as possible. Mr. Clyd<
