Mr. Rauch formerly engag ed in teaching but at present he is devoting himself to farming. Eugene W. Able. Esq.. a promin ent attorney of Saluda, was in New berry Wedn, 'ay afternoon for a few hours. Mr. S. T. Crawford is in Washing ton. D. C., at the St. James hotel. Nessrs. A. T. Brown and G. M. B. Eptin' have returned from St. Louis and other stock markets, where they have been purchasing horses and mules. R. H. Welch. Esq.. a lading law yer of Columbia, was in Newberry this week on business. uMr. and Mrs. A'd-am Feagle, of Peak, were in town this week on a visit to relatives. Dr. Geo. Y. Williams, who is magis trate in No.- 7 tow.nship. has moved his place of residence from the home of Mr. W. H. Sanders to that of Mr. Press N. Boozer. Parties desiring the services of this officer will remember this when looking him up. Mr. Alill's Measu.re. The following is taken from an ar tiele in the Columbia State of Wed nesday forecasting what the present session of the general assembly will accomplish: Col. E. H. Aull will push his rural police bill. This will require some amending, but will be submitted ear lv in the session. With the coopera tion of Mr. J. Wright Nash he has prepared a bill to provide for a police commissioner for each county to ap point as many rural police as neces sary to serve magistrates' papers. These police m'ay be cal'ed upon by an'v maaistrate in the county and are to be paid salaries in lieu of- consta bles' fees. Col. Aall will also introduce a pro hibition bill. He has a bill to put a lovy of one mill for the support of Confederate pensioners and each county is to pay its own pensioners, the classification of pensions to re main as at present. John'stone, -Seeretary. Appeal Not Heard. In Tuesday's issue we mentioneu the case of Harmon vs. Cook as one of the appeals from this county to Ibe heard 'by the supreme court. At Central Methedist church there ill be held a sociable oa Wednesday Ligh-t, January 22.. for men only.._ It will consist of an informal gathering in the auditorium of the church with w't.h music and brief talk,-followed by an oyster supper ani. a social hour in parlors of the church. C-ards will be sent out by mail to mem.Pi-rs of the church and of Meth odisf families. Also there will be eards on deposit at the drug store of Dr. Mayes, which can be had for the asking. This will be purely a social affair; no collection, no eharge. The hour marked is 7:30, Wedne day. January 22. Constable WMiams' Work. The reports of Mr.i T. G. Williams, the county constable apopinited by Governor Ainsel to enforce ...the -dis pensary law in Newberrys cototy, show..that this officer has beenrmery active in discharging the -dutiles of his position. Mr. Williams': went to work on the 11th d*r of* last April, and the suimmary of his work ishown below embraces the period from the iay menitioned to the last day of De eember, 1907. During that time Mr. Williams seized 102 3-4 gallons of contraband liquors which were destroyed as re guired by the, law. duly one suit was brought against him for return of bhat suit was won by him before a jury. _ In the Miayor's court at Newber ry, 'Mr. Williams has conivicted three :efend'ants, one of these being con vited on two charges. The fiines aid amounted to $125.. One prisomer was convicted before he intendant of Prosperity, and paid fine of $10. In Magzistra.te Blease 's cour,t three efendants were conrvicted of offen-. es growing out of the handling of iquors, one of these o.n two charges. [he county got a fine of $5 from one, nd from the others ninety days of work on the chaingang. In the eireuit court one defendant was acquitted, and seven convicted. rhese seven were fined a total sum f $850 or to serve a total of thirty nontbis. Constable Williams has on hand at present three cases for trial at the ext term of the.eircuit court brought ver from last year. Mr. Williams 'thinks that there has been a great improvement in the en forcement and obeying of the law in the past few months. Not near so much whiskey was shipped in during the holiday season as he expected :here would be. -Charged With Larceny. Arthur Thompson, a young white ran who formerly resided in New berry, is said to be wantad at Ware Shoas on a charge of larceny, it be n claimed that he stole a gun and ~ifty dollars from some person there. A request from the a'uthoritiss was ade upon Sheriff Buford to arrest Phompson. it being thought that he aad come to Newiberry, where a num ber of his relatives live. This seems to us I to be a worthy enterprise. one that t should find favor with almost every young man ia town.
