BERKELEY OFIICER.
As Result of Charges of Misconduct
Sheriff is Ordered to Take Charge
of Auditor's Office.
Columbia State. 15th.
The office of auditor of B-rkeley
county .was yesterday closed by di
rection of Gov. Ansel and Mr. C. M.
Wiggins. auditor, was suspended. The
sheriff of Berkeley county was in
struced -to clos. the office and keep it
closed until a successor is appointed
to Mr. Wiggins.
The action of Gov. Ansel was take.i
late Monday evening, after Mr. Wig
gins and his attorney had been given
a hearing. The suspension of Mr.
Wi'ins resulted from an inspection
of his office a few weeks ago by a rep
resentative of the comptroller gener- I
al. gr'oss irregnlarifies in the books of
the office being revealed.
31r. Wiggins admitted the numer
ous errors found in his books, but de
nied that they were made with any
intent to defraud the county or state
and in fact were made without any
intent: whatsoever.
It will be recalled that Mr. Tohn 0.
-Edwards was several days 'ago sus
pended as tre-asurer of Berkeley
1 county on account of irregularities
and wrong entries upon the tax books.
Mr. T. S. Browning of Jedburg, Be
keley county, a former mamber of the
general assembly, was appointed by
the governor to succeed Mr. Edwards..
Mr. Browning was unanimously en
dorsed for the position 'by the Ber
keley delegation in the general assem
bly.
PRBSIDENT SURE TAFT WILL
WIN.
.Olaims First Ballot Will be Enough
for War Secretary-White House
Predictions Regarding Re-.
publican National Conven
tion.
Washington, January 10.-Presi
&ent Roosevelt, 't is said, told White
House callers today that secretary of
War Taft will be nominated on the
first ballot at the Chieazo Conven
tion. 'The friends of tIe War See
retary are apparently very much el
ed. The president has gone farther,
it is said, and says that Mr. Taf t will
be assured of at least 600 .of the 900
votes of the convention on the first
ballot. He counts on a solid west, a
solid sout!h, many of the largest mid
dle western states and one-half the
New England vote. He thinks that
Mr. Taft will have a majority of the
New York votes, especially if G'ov
-ernor Hughes persists in'his non-com
mittal, attitude, and several votes
from other "favorite-son'' states.
In the opinion of the president,
Governor Hugihes cannot hope for
hearty support as long as the public
is uninformed as to w'hrat he stands
for in national affairs, and the other
presidential candidates will have few
votes in thue coming convention ex
cept those that they may receive from
their own states.
There is reason to believe that this
report accurately represents the pres
ident 's belief. The most optimistic
reports have been coming from the
White House lately concerning the
Taft boom. Many of t.he Secretary's
friends are claiming that a Taft land
slide is abotit due, and that delegates
are running for the band wagon from
all directions.
The administ-ration is not letting
up in it.s efforts to elinch the nomina
tion of Taft.
There will be a conference at the
White'House on Monday with the two
Republican referees from Alabama.
Friction has occurrei there and the
president wants to smootih it out. Na
tional Committeeman Scott, of.Ala
bama, is in Washington today. He
says that his state will lead the roll
call in the convention by e asting its
vote solidly for Taft.
When Congressman Waldo, of New
York, one of the leading Republicans
' i congress, and a man who stands
nigh in political eireles in his state,
was told today that the president was
cliaiing a signal vet ory for Taft to
the entire exclusion of Governor!
Hughes. and that the latter was ap
parently to be snowed under, said:
- Unles the Taft managecrs steai the
-:'te of the south by absolutely ignor
ins' the negroes that vote will, in my'
opinion, go to Senator Foraker. The
nominating convention has not yet
been held or have any of tihe state
conventions which are to select dele
gate's to the Ghicago convention. I
repeat that unless that Taft people
steal the southern vote it will go to
Foraker. It is entirely too early to
make such a claim as is now be'ing
made for Mr. Taft.'' P. H. MeG.
