The article in the State yesterday
tolling of the suspected hunt for a
"pot" of gold, started many reminiscences.
There have been a score of
such hunts for buried treasure. Sometimes
the search is inspired by a divination
conceived in dreams. One
man in the lowgr part of this county
dreamed that between three stumps
ho would find buried treasure. The
man found three stumps which corresponded
with his drea/m?and llren
ho went lo work. It is said that he
dug out every foot of earth included
in the lines embracing the stumps
and perhaps went down until he
struck water, and?but what's the
use to tell the result.
"Once upon a time," as the story
goes, treasure was buried in the
woods wire re now is the warehouse, of
the (iibbes Machinery company. The
Southern railway's freight yards adjoin
this property. Whenever the
Southern purpnsos ex-tending its

the laborers work with a will, hoping
that somehow, somewhere they

It was recalled yesterday that ons
morning the city was startled because
the Methodist churchyard had

looking for a pot of gold. Tho excavation
was alongside a wall and
seeni'ed to have been made at a spot
with certain particular landmarks.
There was also recollection of lire
rumors of burred treasure in the
state capital grounds.
And this same spot where Mr. |
lUackwelder is said lo have been
prospecting, has been dreamed of before.
Among the curious who visited
I ho place yest erday was one who recalled
(bat. Mr. Belton Jones and his

on this hillside. Mr. Joires, who
lives in Ilrookland and works in the

of the kind, although he could not recall

many years. She had heard of folks
digging around tho placo but they
never got anything. She believes
that something was found this time,

didn't kivver the hole up as dey wasn't
no use for him to look no furdor."

to whether or not the gold?if any
there were?was in Confederate coin
or in bullion. Gold when bi.-inir shipped
from one county to another is
not sent, in coin, but is melted into
bars and the receiving government recoins
it.
