A Famous Southern Soldier's Son
One of the most beautiful songs o
the Southern Confederacy neve
found its way into print, although i
was one of the most popular song
of the Civil war. This song wa
written by an Alabamian, Lieuten
ant Harring'on.
Aithough quite popular in thi
south during the days of the wai
the song is now almost forgotten
s:ive perhaps by a very few of th
Confederate soldiers. During thosg
da of the war the song was sung
by the soldiers of the Confederac3
about the camp fires and on thi
march it%oughout the :+uth and
soon became a popular song of thost
days. This song was called "Thi
Homespun Dress."
The Homespun Dress.
Oh, yes, I am a Southern girl,
And glory in the name;
I boast of it with greater pride
Than glittering wealth or fame;
I envy not the Northern girl,
Her robes of beauty rare,
Though diamonds deck her snow3
neck
And pearls bestuI her hair.
Chorus.
Hurrah, hurrah!
For the Sunny South, so dear!
Three cheers for the homespun dress
The Southern ladies wear!
Now Northern goods are out of date
And, since old Abe's blockade,
We Southern girls can be content
With goods that's Southern made.
We send our sweethearts to the war
But girls, ne'er do you mind
Your soldier love will not forget
The girl he left behind.
The So&, ern land's a glorious land
And has a glorious cause;
Then cheer, three cheers for South
ern rights
And for the Southern boys!
We scorn to wear a bit of silk,
A bit of. Northern lace,
But make our homespun dresses up
And wear them with a grace.
And, now young man, a word to you
If you would win thre fair,
Go to the flield where honor eahls
And win your lady there;
Remember that 'our brightest smniles
Are for the true and brave,
.A.nd that our. tears .are all-.for those
Who fill the soldier's grave.
While Morgan's army was in Lex
ington, Ky., the women of that city
gave a ball on night in honor ol
Morgan's men. On this occasion, i,
is said, the women appeared in hom3
spun dresses. Lieutenant Harring
ton, of Alabama, who was a membei
of Morgan's army, and who attend
*ed the ball, was so deeply aff' eted by
the flower of Kentucky's you.ng wo
-manhood appearing at a ball gowned
in home spun dresses. that he wrote
the -words to the song. "The Home
spun Dress.'' During the even
the young lieutenant met at the ball
a Miss Earle, and during those few
hours there grew an attachment be
t.ween the two that was more thar
friendship.
Miss Earle was an- aocomplished
musician, and improvised an air foi
the the young lieutenant's song-poen
and played and sang it on thie piarn
-during the evening. It is said thai
all the men of Morgan's. commnand
soon learned the words and the ai
and often sang "The Homespul
