COY. ANSEL WISHES TO BE REELECTED HE DOES NOT DESIRE TO RUN FOR SENATE. Address to People of State-Thanks Public. for Mention of His Name for the Senatorship. Columbia State, 11th. The long-looked-for announcement as to the poltical aspimtions of Gov. Martin F. Ansel for the next two' years at least has been given to the press, and clears up the doubts of several who have looked longingly for the seat in the United States sen ate or for the chair at the west end of the South Carolina capitol. Gov. Ansel announced positively in an ad dress to the people of South Carolina that, while greatly pleased with the mention 'of his name with the sena torial position, he felt that it was his duty that he should again be a candidate for governor, and conse quently offered himself for reelect ion. . This means that Gov. Ansel will have no opposition for that place so far as present conditions show tnem selves. It also means that at present the lineup for the United States sen is between A. C. Latimer, eandi aute for reelection; Col. John J. Dar gan of Stateburg, a noted educator in the lower part of the state, and Mr. O. B. Martin, the state superin tendent of education. Recently, it will be recalled, the governor and the state superintendent of education had a disagreement over the ap pointment of a member of the stata boar- of education and Mr. Martin announced positively that he would not be a candidate for reelection to that office. A few days later he an nounced that he would aspire to the senatorial seat and since then there has been considerable speculation as to the future of Gov. Ansel. His statement draws the line very clear lv and leaves the senatorial situa tion with the prospect of a lively campaign. His excellency's address to the people of the state is as follows: To the People of South Carolina: Within the last few weeks I have been very deeply touched by the the many kind letters received and by and commendation from friends all over the state and also by the appre e iative notices frequently appearing in the pres of the state, with re ference to my administration as gov ernor and. the request and desire of so many that I stand for reelection for another term. For all these man ifestations of confidence I feel truly grateful and I appreciate the same more than words can exi, ress. I have tried to discharge, the dui -ties of my office wit~h an eye single to the interests of all the people, and, while I have doubtless committed er rors, they have been of the head .and not of the heart. I-n obedience to the expressed wish and desire of so many of my friends, I have decided 'to stand for reelection to the office of governor for another term, sub ject, of course,, to the will of the De mocratic' voters in the next primary election. I take this method of thanking the citizens of the state for the loyalty with which they have stood by me in this first year 6f administration. I have received numerous letters and messages urging me to enter the race for the United States senatorship this coming summer, and, while I appreciate the interest and compli 'ment thus expressed, I have thought it my duty to stand for reeleetion to the office of governor. Respectfully, Columbia, S. C., Dec. 10, 1907. ?THE GREAT ANIDBS PAYNE. Won't Sell Medicine But One Minute -To See This is the Event of a Life Time.
