Our -Cotton Letter.
All ye that have a comfortable
seat on your eotton just sit still and
wait, for the game has been won just
so soon as the count is in and the
chaps get the cash to pay -in.
That bluff that has been passing
-the reunds in the Pan?rs aohut the
Texa,, merchants raoluiing about
not furnishin. cotton growers more
supplies unless they sign a contract
to turn their cotton loose just as
soon as the cotton is ginned, sounds '
like a grower was just being made to
sell his cotton anyway, whether he
paid his bills or not. The selling of
the cotton is the main point in that
bluff.
It is now in order for the Texas
farmers to get together and pass re
solutions not to sign away themsel
yes to any such a proposition of
slavory as' these merchants offer
them. But on the contrary to pass
reclutions to pin their faith and
business to those that have proven
themselves to be fnends to farmers
in this trying hard fight and stick
to your friends that have stood by
you in this the toughest fight for
right that the southern farmer has
ever won, and win he will.
Our Way Out of It.
We had better cut acreage in cot
ton next year than to undertake a
large crop again, which is sure to
weaken your strength by growing
more cotton than you are able to
hold for profitable prices.
Never once think you can grow
more cotton than the trade will be 4
eager for at profitable prices to the
grower and load up with an over
production of unsaleabie cotton at
profitable prices, unless you are one
among the rare class of farmers that
are able to put in the necessary addi
tional capital to grow another crop
while you carry over this surplus or
unprofitable crop for better prices!
Commence now and prepare your
selves for trouble again next year in
another form. Be on the safe side
and never again bind yourselves over
under the burden of debt that ties
your liberty and freedom in the
hands of your enemies. Do not un
dertake the job of acting the fool:
yourself and then expect some one
else to pay (or it.
The Cill Meeting of the South Caro
lina Farmers Union on 18th
December.t
Here are a few things th-at the de
legates should'keep in -mind:
First. What is the objeet of this
meeting?
*If the call is made for the purpose
of reorganizing in order to restore
peace and harmony in the union, we
must not forget the fact that we met I
in Greenwood only five months ago
for that same purpose, and if we E
failed to satisfy ourselves at the Ju
ly meeting what' assurance have we
that the December meeting will give y
better satisfaction to all the mem
bership than the July election did ,
at that tim-c e
The majority vote carried in July e
and, if it does not rule in December,
-we are sure of the fact that the De- t
eember meeting will not satisfy the
membership. We must not forget
the fact that when we criticize our
action at the July meeting that we
criticize the action of the ,majority
of thie delegates there, and that these1
delegates represented the large ma
jority of the~ matnbership of t'he ~
State Union at that time.
Therefore about the only plausible ~
and reasonable excuse for calling I
this special meeting only five mon4hs '
after we m-et in July, may be in giv
'. ing the new members who have come r
in since July the opportunity of ~
participating in casting the votes 1
that choose the managers for the
n-ext seven- months. But some may '
say that the act of joining the union f
under the leadership of the present
officers was -equivalent to an en
dorsement of the present officiais of
the union. At best this DYecer'-Mr
meeting cannot be called an3g ..ng
else but a kind of revolution or re-C
volt at our own actions. Our consti- r
tution thait was adopted to guide the f
action of the union has not guided t
the action of some of our officials 3
but little more than the curl in a
pig's tail controls or guides the I
movement of the pig's nose. I trust
that when the union does meet again t
that the delegates will not be in
haste; but will be very deliberate, 1
conservative and reasonable in their t
aetions, and that every member of i
the convention should be called on (
