childhood I enjoyed viigorous vital- I

inactivity. and with the flight of
years there is borne in upon jue conviction

Yet I would .lot have yon to infer
I am unhappy, or that I find life
burdensome. To the contrary, I feel
that I have so much for which to be
thankful. I still retain partial use
o'f the left hand, and by long practice

is your cry. This poor boy, I roin
his roller-chair, calls to you to be
brave. It lie has "so much to be
thankful for," what must von say
that have all those things. that lie

all that a man must needs have to

locked down to his chair.
The world has a contempt for a
coward. A man must play a man's
pa>"t. lie must not whimper, lie
must be brave, and honest, lie must
not try to put the burden of failure
upon the shoulders of an unlucky
fate; if the lash fall upon him lie
must know that his are not the only
shoulders that feel Iho pang. Hemust
sla.ul steadfast and do his part,
and even if after all he fail, he may
yet be thankful, for he has been tried
in the fire and has come out pure
gold?and the unconqneiable soul is
t.ho best gift of Clod, something to
bo thankful for above anything else
in tho world.
This young man, 'Carter Riser,
this "shut-in," may well be thankful.
