AN EXAMPLE TO MEN.
Thq Cheerfulness and Brightness of
an Invalid Should Give Inspira
tion to the Healthy-Mr.
Carter Riser.
The State.
The State is in receipt of the fol
lowing letter from a "shut-in," and
it makes m4ist excellent Thanksgiv
ing reading:
To the Editor of The State:
Twenty-seven years ago .today I
first sa.w the light of day. In early
childhood I enjoyed virgorous vital
ity and health. but when about ter
years of age I ,suffered an attack
of rheumatic fever, and, although
everything medical skill could sug
gest was tried in hope to eradicate
or at least check progress, the mal
ady steadily won ground, and in a
few short-years I had been robbed
of the- whole of my once abounding
vitality and health.
%Ten trying years have gone by
since, yielding to the inevitable. I
settled down to months of helpless
inactivity, and with the flight of
years there is borne in upon me con
viction that never again may I hope
to rise, a part of the restless, active
world.
Yet I would not have you to infer
I am unhappy, or that I find life
burdensome. To the contrary, I feel
that I have so much for which to be
thankful. I still retain partial use
of the left hand, and by long prac
tice have gotten to write a fairly
readable script. The intense satis
faction and pleasure the accomplish
ment brings can not be told in words,
I am blessed with fairly strong eye
sight, and derive no little enjoyment
from books, periodicals, etc. I have
a comfortable home among kind and
thoughtful friends and devoted lov
ed ones to provide and care for me.
Above all, I am giaen deep and
abiding trust in the love and pro
tecting care of my Creator. Time
anda again when trial and disappoint
ment have rolled ;p a -crushing
weight I .have been tempted to deny
my Lord's goodness and care, but
with every trial has come the
thought, the Shepherd knows and
will care for His own. "UTndergeath
are the everlasting arms,' and, oh,
the joy and strength and peace rest
* ing in my Savior's arms. .
'G. Carter Riser.
W'hitmire, S. C.
There is some con-fusion as to the
date of the letter so that we are
left in diubt as to the birthday of
Mr. Riser, upon which he wrote this
letter of optimism, good cheer, fine
edurage, and brave hopeifulness.
Just at this season when the day
of Thanksgiving is almost at hand
we wish to commend to tile 'nearts
ef men the spirit of this brave young
fellow, sitting in his roller-chair,
writing wvit-h one poor left hand a
message of thankfulness to his bro
- thers and sisters of the world, tell.
ing thm to' be of good eheep, that
he, '2 en he, "never again to rise,
a part of the restless, active world,"
yet finds life worth living and. his
Qreator good. "Yet,'' and the
wvpras roll over the heart like those
of a philosopher of old, "I would
not have you to infer I am unhappy
or that I find life burdensome."
1His is a spirit not only un-conquer
ed, but actively grateful: "I feel
that I have so much for which to be
thankful.''
You who have cried out in 'bitter
nes of spirit, you who are blessed
(wiLh vigor of limb, you who walk
about upon the two leg's that God
gave you, how pitiful, how cowardly
is your cry. This poor boy, fron
his roller-ehair, calls to you to be
brave. If he has "so much to be
thankful fort'' what must you say
thai have all those thigs, that he
has not, that men count best in the
world, health, freedom from pain
-freedom to go where you will, free
dom from derpendence upon others,
all that a man must n, ,ds have te
face she battle >f life. If you only
had the- high heait of t.his brave feb
bo~w locked down to his chair.
'The world has a contempt for a
coward. A maa must play a man's
part. He must not whimper. He
must be brave, and honest. He musi
not try to put the burden of failurE
upon the shoulders of an unlucky
fate: if the lash fall upon him he
must know that his are not the only
shoulders that feel the pang. He
must stan-d steadfast and do his part
and even if after all he fail, he may
yvet be thankful, for he has been i
ed in the fire and ha.s come out pure
gold-and the unconqueiabie soul i~
the best gift of God, something t
be thankful for above anything else
in the world.
-This young man, 'Carter Riser,
this "shut-in,'' may well be thank
ful. If his letter may be taken as
te inde of his soul his life will
he one .Worth living, one that will
he of service to the world. He may
not ever be able to work with his
hands. he may not ever be able to
work at all. What of it?rBrown
ing has told us that there are other
things to be reckoned in making up
a "man's amount:"
Not on the vulgar mass
Called "work" must sentence pass,
Things done, that took the eye and
had the price;
O'er which, from level stand,
The low world laid its hand,
Found straightway to its mind,
could value in a trice;
But all, the world's coarse thumb
And finger failed to plumb,
$o .passed in making up the main ac
count:
All instincts immature,
All purposes unsure,
That weighed not as his work, yet
swelled the man's amount.
A girl can't help looking coquet
tish even at a man's picture in a
newspaper.
