of the south will be held in the Lu
theran publication hall in this city
Wednesday and Thiursday. December
4 and 5. The meeting is to be an im
portant one and *t is expected that

you to let. nothing prevent you from
accepting this invitation. Perhaps
never in the history of the world has
there been entrusted to men such
great ability for the advancement of
God's kingdom as now. Never has
there been greater need for the full
use of this power.
"Among all Christians this call
comes to'none so elearly or so strong
ly -as to Lutherans. Among all Luth
erans. to none so strongly as fo us
-Lutheran men of the United synod.
This is to be a conference of busi- i
nes., ien pul*ey. and i to be eonduct
ed strictly in a business way i every
respect.
"No one comes by otial appoint
ment and attendance is, therefore.
purely voluntary. Each man who
comes, comes at his own expense. But
we are assured that special' hot el,
rates w-ill be secured foi; 1. in Colum
bia. The men we most need are our'
busiest men. Therefore if you must
sacrifice some business interests in
order to be presen, y*a .will know
that your other breth-ren are doing
the same thing.
"You are authorized to interest
and bring with you any other broth
er whose presegee will add to the ef
fectiveness of the conference. It. is
our hope that this invitation -will
come to you as a personal call from:
the Lord himself to join in a miove
ment which shall not only bless our
own generation, but all of the. genera
tions following us. -
"Please indicate as soon as possi

.Nature of Conference.
The official programme of the con
ference has the following to say of
the nature of the conference:
" This is to be a conference simply.
It is not a meeting for the inairura
tion of a new and independent mnove-:
ment or for the multiplication of ma
chinery. It can not and will not leg
islate. an'd the r-esuht hoped fromi it is
that it may make more effective the
organization already ofBicially approv
ed by the church.
"This is a laymen's conference,
-aled not with any idea of partiality
toward a particular class of church
members. but rather on the other
hand with a view to empldi size the
fact that the call of the hour is t.o
the whole chor-h-to the laymen as
well as to the ministers, and to give
prominence to ti? still other fact that
the time has come when the men Of
the church should assume their full
share of resposibility and personal
activity along with the women who
have shown such commendable derv
tion.
Purpose of Conference.
In the official prospectus which was
sent. out with the call of the meeting
the pu:poses of the conferene are
outined. The ob.iect of bringing the
laymen of the Lutheran church to
geth.er is primarily to promote among
busness men *a broader. more inti
ae .ad more nersonal acquaintance

and opportunities of the church. To
this end the members are to considex
the best methods for meeting the
needs and opportunities that may
present themselves for consideration.
