CAPTURED IN ASHEVILLE.
William Sanders Wanted For Mur,
der?Two Women His
Victims.
Sheriff Huford returned Id Newberry
on Kridav afternoon willi William
Saadcrs, who was arreted in
Aslit-vilU-.
In March of this year Amelia Mathis
and iter daughter, Carrie Mathis,
were murdered. Amelia was the wife
of Sanders, lfe enticed them away
from home, and il is claimed chocked
tliem to death in the woods near by
and immediately left the county.
Sheriff liuford has been on his (rack
for some time, lie says that when he
first left he went to Whitmire. and
then to Joncsvillc, in I'nion comity,
ami afterwards to Salisbury, N. ('..
and Knoxvillc. Tenn., but for -onie
time has been workiny in a tannery
near Asiieville. The yovernor had offered
a reward of one hundred dollars
for his arrest. Kor some time
Sheriff Huford has l)een in eorcspondence
with (Jcorjr<' Crectilee, a nesrro
detective of Asiieville, and on Thursday
ni.yht (ireenlec telephoned the
sheriff that he had Sanders in custody,
and the sheriff left immediately
for Asiieville and returned with Sanders
on Saturday afternoon,.
Sanders admits that lie killed the
women and yives as an excuse that
his wife had threatened to have him
I>111 out of the way, and in order to
save bis own life, he took the life of
the women, lie uivs no rason or explanation
for killing the daughter.
The evidence before the coroner
showed that the women bad been
struck with some heavy instrument,
but Sanders says that he only slapped
themin the face and then choked
them in the face and then choked
physically and is about fifty years
old'.
This makes another murder case to
the list already on the docket for
this term of court.
