I PLACE OIT SIATE BOARD'
Will Serve the State From a Stand- ]
point of Duty-Never Sought
the Office.
The State.
Aiken. Oct. 24.-',Jr. Hayne F.
Rice. who was recently appoited a
member of the state boaid of educa
ftion, has at:epted the appointment
an( rc,?elved his cominii on today.
Mr. Vee was ;seen bv your corres- I
pondent and made thc following
statement:
"I rUl:e :n commi.sIn(yer the
appoin t on;, persin r c*very con
rce.Zsi<mal distriet in the state, whom,
topether with the state superintend
ert of eduction and the governor.
shall constitute the state board of
vation. The governor alone is
esponsible to the people of the state
for the fitness of his appointcs to
diseharge the duties devolving upon
them. If. in appointing me from this
district Gov. Ansel did not see fit to
consult the superintendent of educa
tion, that is a personal matter be
tween .the two for which I do not
deem myself in any manner responsi
ble. Mr. Martin's attempted flings
at myself. of whom he knew nothing
whatever, were so manifestly unjust,
and his purpose go evident, that I did
not cqnsider them worthy of a reply. 1
"The superintendent construes ex
Gov. Sheppard's refusal to serve on
he board as an endorsement of his
contention against the governor. I
have neither piart nor parcel in any
controversy between Superintendent
Martin and Gov. Ansel, but since Mr.
Maxtin's last published letter to the
governor I ean not refuse to serve
and thereby east discredit upon our
ef executive. This appointment
was not solicited by me, nor by any
a for me, so far as I am informed,
under -all the cireumstances I
it -my duty, niot only to our chief
executive, but to the Whole people of
the state, to accept it and serve to
the best of my ability."
The Editor. 1
How dear to my heart is the steady
subscriber,
Who pays in advance at the birth'
of the year;~
Who lays down his money, and does it
quite gladly,
An easts 'round the office a halo of
_cheer. -
He never says: "'Stop it, I cannot
afford it,"
Nor ''I'm getting more papers than
now I can read,''
But always says, ''Send it, the family
enjoy it;
In fact, we all think it a real house
hold need."
ow welcome he is, when he steps in I
the sanctum;
Ro he makes our heart throb; how I
makes ou.r heart dance.
We outwardly thank him, we inward
ly bless him-i
The steady subscriber who pays in

But, may the Lord give us action, on
the side show attraction,
Who takes out our paper, for year
after year,
Ad then when we meet him, and
kindly entreat him,'
Tfo give us our money, he gets on
his ear.

drop it

of his mail;
And refuses to pay us and dares to

the table,(
To get what is due us, from this

The religious convicenons of appli-1

teademic or university degree, but
heir English must be sound--gram

To a woman with high ideals and
low voice I can offer a comfortable
tome, where no mental tasks will b.e
xpected of her; courteous considera

It is but fair for applicants to be
old that my little girl is no papa's
