COMBINE REVENUE OFFICERS. On Account of Spread of Prohibition, it iii &aid, Capt. Capers Find** Continuation of Two Collcctorships Unprofitable. i Washington, October 11.?For some time a rumor lias been current hero i that the commissioner of internal re- , venue, Joliu G. Capers, contemplated the consolidation of the revenue officers of Georgia and South Carolina in order to effect a saving of expense to the Government. This movement has been brought about by the spread of prohibition in Ihe two slates mentioned and elsewhere. The loss of ; revenue to Ihe government by reason of the closing of many liquor cslab- I lishinents and the consequent crowdill",'of forces has made the officials of (lie revenue bureau here consider Ihe que.*lion of consolidation. Air. Capers returned |o Washington i ' ( fl'oin ilie smith I t 11; i \ and when seen J l>v The Wws am! ' >uricr correspond- j j <>iit. said: ''I ;iin securing all thej data possible <n thi> subject. Alter .lannary ! iieor_'ia will be ! dry. so far as liquors are concerned, while half of the S..ulh Carolina counties -till sell whiskey under the dispensary law. The business in Ihe r hitler slate would exceed thai from I Georgia. 11 is practically admitted thai alter .lannary I next there will '] he little need of a collector in Georgia. In I lie fiscal year 100(5 Ihe total collection for revenue in (Ieorgia were I So, of which came from < I i -1 i I led spirits and ^IH |,01~> |i fermented drinks. leaving almost. ; nothing I'roin tobacco and the few other sources. Willi these revenues gone the total collections from Georgia would probably amount to less than $50,000 a year. The only thing against carrying out a programme of consolidation of Southern stales into new districts for j the next year or so lies in the fact that lo do so would be to abolish much of the political machinery by which the Administration expects to control (lie Southern vote in the next National <C?>n\enlion. As Capl. Capers is one of the Administration I leaders in Soul hern polit ics lie might hesitate at to.? earlv aetimi ?> 1 a cmi-|' solidatiou nature, (ieorgia must be i brought into line in Ihe next Convention. and the collector of internal revenue of that state and his force ol | men have heretofore been important factors in selecting delegates. P. II. McG. Another Account. Washington, October II. Coiiunissioncr Capers, of the internal revenue bureau has under consideration the rearrangement and consolidation for revenue collodion purposes of a number of southern ain' southwestern states. The constitution of Oklahoma. which \\a< recently adopted, absolutely prohibits sale ??I' intoxicating liquors as a beverage within the stale borders, and oil January 1. IlKlS, complete prohibition goes into < I'fecl in (Ieorgia. South Carolina by recent action of I he stale is partly under prohibition and partly under Ihe dispensary system. To meet these changed conditions the commissioner has in contemplation the consolidation of Oklahoma with Arkansas as one revenue division, Georgia and South Carolina as another, Mississippi and .Louisiana and possibly Alabama as a third. As an alternative Alabama may be consolidated with Florida. To carry into died these changes would > necessitate an Ivxeeutivo order by the President, hut the action of some of the stales as to the sale of intoxicating liquors seems to the internal revenue officials to make some action of this character an administrative necessity. ft is not likely, however, thai definite action will be taken for some weeks. An attraction new to Xewherry will be at I lie opera house, Saturday, Oct. 10. "The lloosier Girl," is said to possess an abundance of homely wit and humor thai never fails to please. Miss Kate Watson in the pari of Roxiana Ihe "lloosier Girl" portrays a character that is new lo tlieat re-goer*? that of a shy * and awkward country girl who dresses in gingham pinafores and wears her hair in pigtails.
