The Stale.

At 10 o'clock this morning Acting
Chid D.iiiii .started out with o large
squad of men to the freight depot o|
(ho Southern railroad on Ann street,
ire pulled out his warrant, authorizing
him to seize any illicit liquor
ioimd on the premises. Il(. ;U1(| his
men searched all over the warehouses
ami discovered a large amount of
si nil. Several cases of high quality
whiskey, live large kegs of hulk liquor,
many barrels of Milwaukee beer
ami oilier contraband lmuhIs were

The search thai followed was
the most profitable yet. A rich caplure

amounted to the fancy number
ol .'IS eases of excellent liquor, most |
of It being "bottled in bond." A]

It took two wagons to haul the
booze from the Southern and three
wagons to remove it from the Coast

These seizures mark a new and
important and interesting development
in the .light in Charleston on tlm
blind tigers and especially the wholerulers.
Time and again the transportation
companies have promised the
mayor to cooperate with him in his
light. 1 hey no sooner promise than
they break the compact either in spirit
or in letter.
Some time ago the companies promised
to stop delivering to the tigers.
"Ihe mayor had the police keep a
"dose watch on the depots and warehouses.
It was soon reported to him
that while the transportation companies
did no( actually lake the liquor
out in their wagons and deliver
it 1? the tigers they allowed the
wholesale tigers to conic to the buildings
ami take the contraband out. In
many cases it was found that Ihe tigers
would reconsign the whiskey to
other parties.
Mayor -Kliel! put Corporation

)>hase <?!' the contest, lie s0on reported
(o the mayor that when the transportation
companies allowed Ihe illicit
dealers in liquor to come into
their place of business and handle,
the. liquor or take it out or to reconsign
it it amounted to a delivery in
ihe eyes of (he law. Acting on litis
report, the mayor issued orders to
the acting chief to immediately seize
all the liquors thai were to he found
on [he premises. All along lite police
have been prevented from seizing the
liquor in the hands of the corporations
bv the provision of the constitution
which prohibits the seizure of
goods in transit by a common carrier.
As soon as delivery is made, however,
