I lu' 1 Icrald and News lias from tin: l<> linu'. in season and out of seasoi tried to impress upon (Ik- people wli .live in tlio count ry the importance <. improving the public highways. W have done this before the rural' di livery of mail was established, an since the establishment of this se vice we have tried'to impress the fa< that in order to have it continued, was. absolutely necessary to put tl I roads in good condition. There is n<? step which has bee taken by the government since | was founded that has been of as nine | benefit to the ureal mass of the pe< pie as the establishment of the fri delivery of mail throughout the run districts. In order that it shall li continued, however, it is necessar thai the roads shall be in good eond t ion and that there shall be mail to li delivered. In other words, cverv pal ron or resident along the route of e\ cry rural carrier should put up a up-to-date mail box and should tak at least one paper. Hie llerald and News goes int nearly every box on all of the route which uo out in this country; but n doubt there are some yet in which i is not a visitor. Now, it costs ver liille lo take a paper and it helps I keep your route going, and we woul be glad to see The llerald and New placed iu every mail box and go int the home of every fanner in Newbei ry county. Mut if some other papc is preferred, we urge you to take that because it would be a step hack war to have any of these routes discoi l iiiucd. These observations are made aftc reading the following circular lette which has been sent out by Congress man Aiken: Abbeville. S. ('.. Sept. 7. l!)07. 1 )ear Sir: I nder the rilling of the lili Assist ant Postmaster (ieneral, rural route that arc not appreciated will be di? continued or changed to tri-weeklie: Appieciation, as defined by that oflict means that the people who are serve should subscribe to newspapers an otherwise increase the volume o business, see that roads are kept i good condition, and put up approve mail boxes. One of the strongest arguments tha has been advanced in favor of the rui al service, is that it induces more read ing. broadens the individaul's knowl edge and better fits him as a eitize and as a business man to protect hi interests. I'lie route serving yon is very nea the danger line in the matter of mai handled, and it must hi' incrcasei Kn-wirg that you fully appreeiat tile merits of the service, let me urg you ! > u?e your influence for its in proveinent. Set' your neighbors an have them subscribe for at least on paper. Where they haven't approve boxes, urge the.in to put them up. I sections of your roads are in bad cot dition have a delegation of your citi> ens to direct the County Supervisor' attention to them. A little work | '< perlv directed will do wonders in th improvement of your route. Trusting that I have your heartie? co-operation in this work, 1 am, Very truly yours, Wyatt Aiken. Undiplomatic.
