WARNING TO GIRLS. American Women: Cross their L e; too Much and Injure their Health. Philatielphia conrpelence in Cie ago Tribune. Dr. Josef Garzourka, of Budapest says American women cross their legi -too much. The practice makes then nervous. he d, ires. and generalli undermines their health. Dr. Gar zourka is touring the world in th( interest of science and reached Phil adelphia today after a week's stay ir New York. "Imagine," said he, "sitting in 2 car and seeing a comely young womar cross her legs in such a manner thai one of the limbs is displayed some times to the knee. In no country or the. Continent can women be seen sit ting in public with their legs crossec so. To me it is astounding. I have observed it in New York, and here it Philadelphia it is also the custom. I am given to understand it is so al: over America. No wonder your wo mqn are nervous. Such positions a. they assume while .sitting are, to mi mind, sufficient cause to undermin( their nerves and health. "In ffungary the women sit ur straight and erect. They do not lear against things. They do not lik( roeking chairs. The American womer seem to like nothing but easy loung ing chairs." Dr. Alice M. Seabrook, of the Wo man's Hospital, of Philadelphia, wa asked her opinion of the distinguish. ed foreigner's statement. "I deplore the fact that a foreign er can come over here and make' sucli a violent criticism of us which iE true," she said. "We all cross om legs. It is comfortable, and we don't stop to consider the injury that ii works nor the appearance we make, Crossing the legs works injury in some cases, but I think the ungracefulness df the pose makes the practice more to be condemned than the fact thai it works physical injury. "In past generations in this coun try the women sat as straight on then chairs as the doctor says the womer of Austria do now. I personally re member the time when I was not al lowed to sit in a rocking chair. Ob. serve the elderly women that one sees right here in Philadelphia. The greal mraajority of them sit straight, noi even resting against the back of 2 .staright-back chair. And that is th~ correct way to sit. It indicates poise and physical poise means, as a rule mental poise." Dr. W. M. L. Coplin, of the Jeffer son Hospital, said America' showed its disdain of the dignity that hedges about a King many years ago, and since that time the country has beer going right ahead showing*its disdai: of other forms of dignity. He seem ed to think if the American womer wish to cross their legs why let then go ahead and cross them. "It is certainly not dignified.' said he, "and in some cases works physical harm to the individual. Bu1 it is a restful position,.and it is, tc my mind, a form of individualism. "The woman of a past generatior looked down upon such a custom. M3 grandmother would have been shock ed to see a young woman eross he] legs in public place. The Americar woman is an independent creature and the habit of crossing her legs in pub lie is right in line with the advancee ment of independent thinking." -PROCLAMATION.
