Rev. J. M. Henry, of Louisiana, is on a visit to relatives and friends in Newberry and on Sunday morning e preached an excellent sermon in Johnstone Street Meth'odist church. It was an earnest meeting compos of earnest men and we believe will sult in something being done to irds the building of this proposed Aley line. Of course the meeting ts largely for the purpose of talking er the situation and putting mat. rs in shape so that some definite ac m might be taken. The Killing Takes Place at Old Town Inquest Held-Negro Sur renders. Ed .Jessie. and John Hardy. both colored men. liviii on Mr. Z. 0. Whittle's place, near Old Town. had a little shooting engagement Satur day which resulted in an inquest over Hardy's dead body nnd the loe!:1v up in jail of Jessie. From the fqcts brought out at the inquest it seems that several negroes employed by Mr. Whittle lived in a double house on his place. Hardy and others occupied one end of the dwe.ling, Jessie and others occupying the other end. Just about dark on Saturday Hardy came home, having some whiskey in him, and engaged in a word battle with Henry Spearman and his wife, Henrietta. After a lit tle Hardy began cursing and abusing Jessie who was in his part of the house. Hardy went in and waved his pistol in Jessie's face and said "I'll kill you if you've got hair.'' Hardy backed out of the door and shot at ws time. Immediately Jessie fired two or three shots. A few min utes afterward some of the negroes went out and found Hardy lying face downward, apparently dead. The coroner's examination showed that two balls took effect. One of these went through the fleshy part of the right arm into the right breast, the other was in the lower part of the back, right at the spine. Although efforts were made no physician could be secured. The dead man had a pis tol in his hand, one chamber of which cotained a loaded cartridge, another an empty one which appeared to have been recently shot. Three. iegro wo men and a negro man saw the shoot ing and all testified that Hardy fired the first shot. Soon after Sheriff Buford. arrived at the scene of the killing,: Ed. Jessie surrendered to him and w'as brought to Newberry Sunday night and plac ed in jail. Mr. Wikittle retained Mr. Eugene S. Blease to defend the negro and Mr. Blease was present at the -inquest. He will make application ~.for bail for Jessie one day this week. Clay Pigeon Shoot. At four o'clock last Friday after noon a very interesting clay pigeon shoot was had with St. Phillips team, Newberry No. 1 and No. 2. We give j,i this connection the( score each member made as well as he total score. The shoot was held on the Newberry grounds and was greatly enjoyed by the various members of the teams. St. Philips. Mi. -vies spoke of the old, church and -'.e building of it and compared the old church to the pres ent handsome country church which is now occupied by the congregation. He also spoke of the progress which had been made in the growth and de velopment of the congregation. He and Mr. Bowles are natives of New berry and, much of their ministerial life has been spen-t in this county. Mr. Sligh who is now the pastor of the church had served it as pastor many years agz. It was entirely fitting, that Mr. Sligh and Mr. Bowles who, have probably been in the ministry of the Lutheran church in this state longer than any others should have part in these exercises. At the conclusion of the morning exercises dinner was served on the! ,rounds and the old people and the, yonz people all enjoyed an hour of social intercourse, talking over the event:; in cnnnection with the history of this congregaticn. After the dinner was over a very istructive and interesting talk to the young people was made by Mr. J. B.! O'Neall Holloway. He pointed out the importance to the young people of attending the Sunday school pnd studying the Bible and only in this way can the church be built up. Dr. D. M. Crosson, a native of this county but who now resides at Lees ville and who had come over to Pros-:1 perity to deliver an address to the membiers,of the Company G. at their annual barbecue on Saturday wasi also present and made a very inter esting talk to the congregation. He said it had been 26 years since he. had been at Colony church and, of course, he noticed a great many changes during that time. Not having1 been in the community in so long a time the changes were probably more noticeable to him than to those who had been living here. This church is' 60 years old now, has a menibership of over two hun dred. ~The first exereises to the old folks at Colony on Sunday were a de-I cided success and greatly enjoyed by the large congregation present. A Card. Miss Marye R. Shelor, of West minster, S. 10., is State Organizer for South Carolina .under Interna tional Sunshine Society. A tireless worker. she has accomplished won ders in disseminating information, organizing cireles, etc. But much re mains to be done. The state organ izer must not bear the burden alone. she needs cooperation and eneouralge ment. Will readers of The Herald and News help? Just now the great et need is stamps with which to press the work of organization. The appeal is made to all'who love the cause who believe in breaking their alabas ter boxes over their friends while still living-to sit down today and write Miss Shelor a line of encouragement enlosing some stamps, and thus have part in taking this whole state for sunshine. Aull, edi tor of The Herald and News, who has given so much time to working fcr a trolley line from Augusta to Ne. berry. Mr. James U. Jackson, who was ap pointed to represent Augusita,. was navoidably absent. Greenwood and Saluda were not represented. Mr. T. L. Harley, of North Augusta, was ad ied to the local committee to work between that place and Edgefield. And Messrs. Walter Cheatham and E[. Banks to the Plum Branch com mittee. There were present many citizens who took a deep interest in the pro ceedings. iChairman Nicholson call ed the meeting to order at 11 a. m., S. MeG. Simpkins acting as secre tary. Messrs. Z. F. Wright, E. H. Aull J. C. Sheppard, W. P. Calhoun, M. B Stuckey. W. A. Strom, H. A. Shaw M. C. Butler and B. D. Kitchen made addresses. The Hon. J. C. Sheppard offered the following resolution, which wa; adopted: Resolved. That a committee ol three shall be appointed by the chair man of this meeting to corresponi with the authorities of the August2 and Aiken Electric Railway compan and of the Seaboard Air Line rail road company as to the constructioi of a -trolley line +o connect the saii elecitric railroad with the Seaboard railroad by a trolley line runnin, through the town of Edgefield, and thence on by the most practicabli route, and this meeting pledges it: most active co-operation in the estab lishment of said line. It was furthe: asked that Newberry, Saluda 'ant Greenwood act in concert with saji committee. J~. C. Sheppard, A. E. Padgett an< W. P. Calhoun were appointed on thi committee.. The local committees were urget and instructed to gather data as t' rights of way, subscription, etc., a rapidly as possible to enable them t< make an early report. It is generally thought that thi Seaboard will take hold of this mat ter, as it will give the road a mucl deserved and needed outlet to Florida The meeting was an enthusiastie an< a business one, and everybody feel encouraged over the situation.'
