Leitzsey and Jos. M. Brown will give a barbecue at B. B. 'Leitzsey 's on Thursday, July 25. One of the features of the day will be the clay pigeon shoot. The entrance fee d for twenty-five shots will be one dol lar, of which half will be divided in prizes for the two highest scores. All members of the gun club teams will shoot in first elass, all others in second d class. d A large crowd and a good dinner, and an altogether enjoyable day are ~expected. The score between the St. Phillips and Newberry gun clubs is now very close, and Whitmire, which led the teams in the shoot last season has not ta.ken p)art in the shoots this summer, - but will be present on this occasion. Taylor, the young man who kill( his father in Saluda county son time ago, was granted bail by Jud R. C. In an exciting game here on Sa uray afternoon the West End tea of yhis eity defeated the Clinton tea by a score of 3 to 2. I reach r- ed there to find the pastor devoid of a ,d wife as Mrs. Speer had for a month been absent on a visit to relatives, and though expected had not arrived. i So- with the pastor at this time in such1 t. a '.'fra.me of mind'" I aeeepted the - kind invitation to the large and comn e fortable homne of Mr. Morrow, where I s found a generous hospitality. How te ever, my stay at this home was brief as I- was soon sought by my kinsman, Mr. William Coleman, the son of the s. most. noble and generous lawman of our South Carolina Methodism, Col. Rebt. C. Coleman. His wife also was a Coleman brought up on the banks of the beautiful Freneh Broad just a few miles from Asheville. Whitmire has greatly grown since I was there twelve years ago. A lag'e cotton mill has increased the popula tion and 3added greatly to the busi ness movement. A new church, larg er and better, has replaced the old one, and a very nice parsonage is p'ow fully paid for, and in good condition.1 Whitmire has grown but the sur rounding country, which in other days. had a prosperoius and cultured popu lation. is now almost abandoned. The farms are now turned over to the col ored people who as renters, occupy the territory. Very soon, as it now seems. some of the churches in -the rural parts must be abandoned. Sunday. the 7th of Juily, was a summer day such .as would do honor to Central Africa or the Amazon val i- e. Still the friends of Whitmire did e not fail to -come. At(the miorng hour h there assembled a fine congregation n1 an'd T sm-oke to them about some n n answered questions of the Bible.
