Lover, who was here today on his
way home from Hishopville, talked in
an interesting way to your correspondent
about the new soil surveys being
made in his district by the newly
created division of utilization of
soil. The experiments are being made I ]
by Prof. Frank I'ennolt and three J1
other experts, Hie quartet working in i
two squads.
Heretofore these surveys have been
limited to find the type of the soil j '
in .scattered sections'ol! the state and
issuing bulletins on this information M
with maps. Now not only the type j '
of the soil is being determined, but the!'
crop best adapted to the various Iyp- 1
os is discovered to the farmer by act- '
ual experiment and the I'ertilizi.r
that can be best and most economi- '
cally used is also determined. '
''in Lee county we have already
discovered twelve distinct types of
soil," said Air. Lever. "Willi this
information we will make a map of
the county pointing out where the '
soils lie, and we will conduct 50 to '
7o farms of a few acres each to demonstrate
the fertilizer and crop it
will be best to use.
"J told the Marlboro farmers, who
are uring 1,500 pounds of commercial
fertilizer to the acre, that L believed
that this state, which spends $5,000,000
a year for commercial fertilizer,
more than any other slate in the Union
uses, is wasting a third of this
fertilizer by using too much, and a
third more by shallow plowing*.
''In my opinion the south has suffered
more from politicians talking
demngogery and pessimism than from
all other sources. The farmer wants
to get the idea in bis head that lie has
got to work hard and intelligently and
with failh and confidence. The
^southern larmer has untold riches
in his grasp if he will but get down
to work and quit growling about his
do w n-1 rod den condition.''
Mr. l.ever and the experts have organized
an improvement association
among the Lee county farmers, and
will organize similarly throughout his
district. Next September or October,
when the crops are "laid by" he
"will have representatives of all the
principal divisions of the agricultural
department come to the stale and
lecture to country meetings held in
the picnic style.
Speaking of the drug farm in Florence
county, which the government is
conducting in Congressman F.llcrbe's
district, Mr. Lever said:

experiment that $75 an acre can
