some terrible experiences there is, i

'When six miles off Ocean City, rc

Bfidd ran afoul of a marine creaturf
fully 100 feet long, with a head whic
the sailors declared resembled nothin
so much as that of a giant rhinocer
ons. The sloop -crashed into the sid
of the ci'eature--whale, sea serpeni
or whatever it was-with a resultan
shock that broke the shaft of th
boat's auxiliary engine, unhinged th
rudder, and opened her seams so tha

Rudder Broke in Crash.
Said Capt. Parker to-night, relatinj
his experience:
"We were sailing along before
stiff east wind, when suddenly, as th
boat sank into the trough of a wavc
she struck something, then slid off in
to deep water again. The shoel
threw me from tlie wheel and brough
the frightened men from the cabii
pell mell. The wbeel was gone, ou
rudder broken, and the propeller twis
ted.
"We were taking account of thes
injuries when one of my- men criei
out, My God, what is -that?' and poin
ted over the stern. What I first sai
looked like th.e head of a giant rhin
'icerous, only its imouth must hav
been ten feet across.' The top of th
head was covered with hig bumps, ani
from each of these it would occasion
ally spout what looked like water ani
blood. I never saw Aor heard of any
thing like it before nor never want t,
again. I never took much stock il
sea serpents, but this creature wa
not a whale. Its body was black ani
must have been fully one hundre
feet long, tapering toward the tail.
Men in Panic of Fright.
'The tiing following us for nearl;
an hour. My men nearly died o
fright as they bailed and hi'lped rt
set tht rudder. We must have wound(
ed the fish pretty badl1y wheln w
struck it, for the water in its wak
was bloody. Every once in a whil
it seemed to have a sort of spasn
lashing the water furiously an
spouting. We were ab)out t wo ile
from shore whent the -ereature sanli
