Death of Mrs. H. H. Folk.
-Mrs. Catherine Folk, wife of Capt.
'o H. H. Folk, died at her home in this

Negro Woman, Left Her 'Children
Alone In a House Where There
Was a Fire.
A negro child three years old died
on Mr. Jacob Richardson's' place, in
the St. Paul's section of the county,
on Monday, from burns received
while in a house in which it was left
by its mother. Another child who
was int the house was also seriously
burned; but will recover. The mother
had gone out to do some washing.
How the children managed to get in
the fire is not known.
.The St. Paul's correspondent of
The Herald and News, in speaking
of the affair, says: "It seems to be
gross carelessness with the negroes.
There ought to be a law making it
a crime punishable when mothers
leave helpless children in a house
alone, and then die from being burn
ed.
GRAND JURY PRESENTMENT.
Recommendations As To Public High- (
ways, Bridges and Ferries-Other
Matters.
The graind jury on Tuesday after
noon made its final presentment to
the court of general sessions, Judge
R?. 0. Purdy presiding, and was dis
diarged. Following is the -present
nent:

2. Whereas, it has been reported to I

made no rep)ort, we, the grand jury,
app)eal to the cour't and -ask it to take
this matter up for further disposal.
6. Whereas, there are sections of
public highways which runi alongside
of the railroads, in many instances
for several miles, whereon passing 3
trains often frighten horses and thus
imperil the lives and property of
persons traveling in vehicles; and,
wvhereas, the changing .of such sec
tions of the public highways would,
in many instances, shotnteds
tance between two points, we recom
mend that the supervisor make such ~
changes wherever p)racticable. We
also recommend, as a special instance
of the above recommendation, that
the road from Mr. W. E. Merchant's
to Jalapa be changed to follow the
old road bed of the old Laurens rail
road, from Mr. W. E. Merchant's to
Jalapa, thus shortening theo distance
between these two points and1 avoid1
ing two hills, and also removing the
peril of driving along side the raW
road.
The committee appointed by the
foreman of the grand jury to investi
gate the general condition of the
county home reports that the inmates
ai'e highly pleased with the tratment
received at the hands of the present
county home keeper; but 'that' the
house occupied by superintendent
needs another roof very badly. We,
therefore, recommend that the super
visor h)e instructed to buy the mater
ial and. have the above named house
covered at once.
The committee appointed to inspect
the county jail report that they find
all rooms and cells in a good, clean,
sanitary condition.
