'SHOOTING NEAR GOLDVILLU. )I Elbert Copeland, of Clinton, Was Shot and Instantly Killed Yester day Morning. te News reached the city early yester L) day morning 'of a shooting scrape w near Goldville in which Mr. Elbert Copeland, of Clinton was instantly killed. He was shot five times each y bullet taking effect. It seems that Elbert Copeland, Wash and Lee Hunter and Ross Leek were together in Wash Hunter's'store ir near Goldville, when the shooting oc in curred, about three o'clock in the !e morning. Nothing definite could be learned of the affair at the time of going to press but it was reported that Wash Hun ter did the shooting. As far as could he learned no arrests had been made i. up to 5 o'clock yesterday afternoon. Mr.. Elbert Copeland was about 28 . years of age and was engaged in the poultry business at Clintin. He is a a- younger brother of Messers. 0. 0. it and E. B. Copeland, who left yes terday morning for Goldville. Newberry Land and Securlty Com Pany Declares an Annual Dii- rc dend of Eight Per Cent. . At the annual meeting of the stock holders of .the Newberry Land and Security company held in the city F( hall on Wednesday night, an annual dividend of eipht per cent payable July 25, was declared. The treasurer reported that $9, 914.90 had been payed out in divi-, dends, and still had a nice, surplus- W left. The old board of directors were elected' as follows: 0 Kleetner, T. C. Pool, 0. MeR. Holmes, .L W. Floydj 0. E. Summer, E. B. Wilbur, Jno. M. W Kinard , 0. B. Mayer and Geo. B. Croier. The board of directors met imedi ately after and elected the following officers: 0. B. Mayer, president; C. E. Summer, vice-president; Jno. M. B Kinard. secretary and treasurer. The law firm of Hunt, Hunt and Hunter were elected as attorneys. Fine Potatoes. We were shown a fine specimen of F( the Irish Cobbler variety of potatoes on Wednesday, grown by Dr. J. K. Gilder. It is a lai-ge white potato and is fine for table use. Mr. .John Scott. of this city sent at the specimen to Mr. E. J. Watson, of commissioner Department of Agri- an culture. Commerce Immigration of South Carolina, who had,them photo graphed for illustration and then pre served for exhibition. Mr. Watson desires other speci mens of agriculture which can be exhibited with advantage to the state.
