Spartanburg, Yorkville and Flor ence are making efforts to secure the State Reformatory which was provid ed for at the last session of the legis lature. Greenwood is soon to have water power from Savannah river to furn ish her electric current. We have been talking about getting water pow er from Parr Shoals for a couple years. It is a pity we could not get some water power from some of the many powers in the rivers near enough to Newberry which is going to waste simply because it is not har nessed. This power could be furnish ed at a profit cheaper than the cost of coal to generate it by steam. It is getting time to get to work on that union station at Newberry if we are to have it during this genera tion. Probably when Col. Wharton finishes electioneering in Washington and the other railroad commissioners return from Cuba they will have time to take it up. The union depot should be built at the foot of Caldwell street at the junction of the two roads but the makeshift promised us would be an improvement on what we have. We would like to see something coming our way. Some two or three months ago a start was made on the proposed change and about one hundred feet of track was laid, but there the mat ter was left in abeyance for better weather. Surely this weather would be good enough for this work to pro ceed. If the court house commission were selecting a site for the reason that those who owned adjacent property were to be benefited and were to con tribute to the county for that favor there is no doubt they could have re ceived much more liberal bids from either Prosperity or Whitmire. No doubt either one of these enterprising towns would have given several acres of the most desirable land. in their midst and probably chipped'in a mite| to help the county build it. The commission has decided and that is final but it is a great pity. The strets that surround the location selec ted are scarcely wide enough for two vehicles to pass and 'the lot is small and the court house will be hidden. But we suppose the commission thought the county needed the contri butions. And we have no doubt they acted conscientiously in the matter but sometimes even people who do that make grievous mistakes. Nothing has been heard of the pro posed change of schedule on the C. & G. division of the Southern which was agreed upon some time sago and which is to go into effect on the 10th. Of course the change will be made and when it is no doubt the trains'will be able to live up to it. We are glad to note in the Record a few days ago that at least one citi zen of Cohimbia has awakened to the fact that such a schedule would not only be a convenience to people who wanted to go to Columbia but would be a great benefit to Columbia and that citizen, byr the way, is a lawyer' who would probably receive the least direct benefit from such a - schedule. Mr. R. W. Shiand had an interview in the Record showing how morning trains into Columbia and afternoon trains out would be of benefit to the business men, especially merchants, *but we have heard of no other efforts being made to secure such a train from the up country. Surely the business men of Colum bia realize and appreciate the trade from this section. And frequently, persons from all over the state have business at the capital and would like to go and attend to it in person but do not care to lose part of two days and a night from home. Tihe schedule will go on in a. few days. TROLLEY LINES ON PAPER. A new trolley line has just been I] completed from Spartanburg to Aik en. Last week a line was built from Asheville to Gaffney, which will prob- t ably connect with the Yorkville and Charlotte line at Lockhart. The line from Rock Hill via Chester and Great Falls to Columbia makes. connection I there with the Augusta-Aiken line. You must remember, too, that most enterprises in this day that amount to anything have first to be constructed in the newspapers. What objection is there to it? Most all of these lines will be built with wood and steel in the near future. Congressman Lever. Hon A. F. Lever has served the Seventh Congressional district so ac Beptably and has won so many stead fast supporters by business-like, at tention to the interests of his constit aents that his re-election for another term is assured. There is no prospect Df any opposition to him this year, and if there should be the man wfio makes the race will be doing so mere ly for the sake of gaining experinece as a campaigner and stump speaker. -Sumter Item. Mr. Lever makes a good congress man and should be returned without )pposition. Mrs. Bivens Acquitted. St. George, April 4.-Mrs. Dora Bivens, wife of State Senator Bivens, >f Dorchester, was tried here yester lay for the murder of a Jew peddler aamed M. Greenberg, whom she shot >n the night of February 5, 1905, while her husband was attending the legislature. The defense offered no avidence and a verdict of acquittal was rendered in a short time after the jury retired. Greenberg was shot in the presence f two neighbors G. M. Limehouse and J. J. Platt, the latter bringing in Limehouse to eject Greenberg from the premises. Greenberg had locked himself in a room on the premises when the two neighbors came in and broke open the door. He sat with his hands stuffed in his overcoat pockets and said, when asked for an explana tion, of his presence at the place that "Mrs. Bivens -had sent for him." This enraged Mrs. Bivens who fired upon Greenberg killing him. She said Greenberg had tried to persuade her to run away with him and had attempted to criminally as sault her. An imnportant state* witness, a di minutive- Jew named Rhoden, coul'd not be found although the case was delayed in the hope of securing his attendance. The prosecution was conducted by Solicitor Hildebrand, while State Sen ator Cole L. Blease, of Newberry, was leading counsel for Mrs. Bivens. Election To Vote School Tax. Mr. Wm.' H. Folk, Chr.
