Speaking of what a newspaper does for a community, United States Senator David Davis, of Illinois, made an address that remains fresh in the 'memory of newspaper men. .He said: "Every year each local pa per gives from 500 to 5,000 free lines for the community in which it is lo cated. No other agency can or will do this. The editor in proportion to his means does more for his own town than any other man. He ought to be supported not because you happen to like him or admire his writing, but be cause a local paper is the best invest ment a community can have. It may not be crowded with great thoughts, but financially, it is of more beauty than both preacher and teacher. To day editors" do more for less pay than any other man on earth. Patronize your home paper not as a charity but as an investment." And yet in every community there are people who never do anything to help the local newspaper except to cuss it and abuse it and talk about how it ought to be run. And there are those who appreciate their paper. Both classes are necessary to the life of the newspaper. COLUMBIA'S' PIETY. The article published elsewhere on 'the location of the court house is alright. The Herald and News does not want the court house 'to "come our way'' unless the way we suggest 'is thought to be the :best site4fr its its location. We have no interest in the. matter whatever except that which - s best for. the county 'of Newberry, and if we are to build a new court house it should be located at such place as will serve the .best interests of the entire county. We- publish in full Senator Till Sman's broadside on the dispensary. ,There is no use to make charges and talk ,about rings. If the dispensary system is to remain' at all it must re main not as a state institution but under county control. It seems to us that more noise is. being made about the use of request -books than is necessary. If that is all that is wrong with the dispensary it is in good shape. * *.Utiopia Locals. Herbert's on Sunday afternoon to practice, singing for the Easter serv ice. Mr. Claude Schumpert of the city visited his father, Mr. F. M. Schum pert on last Sunday. Miss Bessie Long, who has been on an extended visit to her sister, Mrs. D. L. Hamm, will leave for her home in Greenwood next week. The attendance at the Utopia school has fallen off somewhat on- account of the measles sc-are and some have drop ped out to work in the farm. The new pastor at New Chapel, Rev. A. H. Best, has filled several ap pointments here and is very generally esteemed. * * "The Funniest Thing That Ever Hap pened." The Old Maids' Convention and Its Results as Miss Dunkel will put it on at the opera house April 6, with a large cast of Newberry's best talent. Miss Dunkel has had 200 conventions with unfailing success and the one here will be different from the one held here in the past. A second part of the programme will be a series of beautiful statue poses under power ful colored lights. Sale of seats opens at Gilder & Weeks' Wednesday, April 4. Prices 50 and 35 cents. State Sunday School Convention. The Sunday school convention at Pelzer to be held next week, April 10-12, promises to be a great gather ing of the Sunday school workers of the state. It is expected and hoped that there will be a large number to go from Newberry county. Dr. Pel ham, the state chairman, advises us that two of the International field workers will attend, Mr. W. C. Pearce teacher training secretary, from Chi cago, and Mrs. J. W. Barnes, Inter national primary secretary, from Newark, N. J. These two are very prominent in the work and are ex ceedingly instructive and entertain ing. Our readers should remember that the railroads have granted es pecial rates of full farie going and 1-3 fare -returning. . Write to Mr. A. M. Lander, Pelzer, of your coming so that entertainment may be provided. It is hoped many Sunday schools from Newberry and the county will send delegates to this interesting oe casion. S'olicitor for the Seventh Judicial distriet, has been discussed to a consi(lerable (e gree as an available candidate for Attorney General, and there has been so much talk to that effect that we had about concluded that he would be in the race. But Mr. Sease is quoted as saying that he will not aspire to the attorney generalship, but will be perfectly satisfied to be re-elected solicitor. The state can't have too many good solicitors, and Mr. Sease enjoys the distinction of ranking with the very best of them.-Greenville News. There is no doubt of Solicitor Sease being among the best prosecuting officers in the state. His management of the George Hasty murder case was able and brilliant and the conviction of the murderer was largely due to this talented and brave solicitor. The state would be proud of him as'at torney general.-Hampton Guardian. A great many nice things have been said about Solicitor Sease. The Her ald and News is always delighted to hear them for in addition to our per sonal friendship Solicitor Sease is a. Newberry boy and we are always pleased to hear good things of our own boys when they go to other fields. The Herald and News thinks Solicitor Sease is wise in retaining his position as solicitor rather than running for attorney general though it has been pretty- generally conceded that he could win if he would enter the race.
