SOME FACTS ABOUT A MUC]

The following from the pen of N!
Luther Roberts, editor of the Lavon
Times, which is published in Fran
lin county, is self explanatory, 1:
sides containing the desired inform
tion.
From the time when the memo
of man runneth not to the contra
this unanswered and dimly mysi
rious query has stalked the bread
of our land like some unquiet, acet
ing specter, seeking its revenge. V4
iimes have been written, tales ha
been spun and myths and legends i
numerable have sprung up arom
this parent stem. 'Its Tinehas'spre;

calculating Englishman, the phlegm
ic Du!ehman and mayhap the hung
Hottentot has pondered long ai
gravely over the surreptious swat, t'
echo of which, like that of the pati
otic musket at the opening of t
American revolution, was heard rom
the world. And, after all, the thoug:
ful genius who observed, "I doi
know who hit Billy, but it must ha
been a devil of a lick,'' has voiced t
sentiment of us all, even to this ye
day.
"With a deep-seated desire to knc
something more of Billy Pattersc
and to see with our own eyes wht
ever of record there was of this
markable m~an, who expressed hii
self as dissatisfied when his da ugl:
er married the younger brother of t
great Napoleon, ivho brought powd
to the. Continental army when Was
ington, before Boston, had not enou
to fire a salute, and who after rovii
the seas unawed under the flags
four governments, came to Franki
conty-and got hit; 'we set forth
search of first hand knowledge.
"CAnd in all gravity 'tis a wonde
ful tale, even after being divested
the glamor of tradition. For the
jare those who claim the story of tl
hitting of Billy Patterson to be
haphazard origin. And it is equal
true that others with whom we tal
ed, as stouitly contended that ti
phrase had foundation in fact, at
declared that Billy Patterson w
struck while on a visit to his proper
in Franklin county, and offered a r
ward for his assailant.
".Through the kindness of Mr. A.
eal, who, by the way, knows the r
ords of Franklin county as well
any man in it, we were shown t]
will of William patterson. as it is r
orded in all its quaintness of cor
position and orthography. It is doub
less one of the most remarkable do
ments ever recorded in the state.
possesses exceeding historical ar
literary value. Contrary to an o
and cherished tradition there is r
record in will of a fund hiavin,z be(

question of who hit Billy Pat tersol
but there is much to repay the read<
for the time spent in perusing it.

In reply, the following was received
from Mr. Roberts:
- William Patterson was the only
orioinal. all-wool. simon-pure. "Billy'
who on one occasion was hit. He is
the only genuine-beware of imita
tions. Another "William.'' which will
,ie probably lead some astray, was only
,d his company name. He was known
as "Bill'' to his tenants and dock
t hands, and as "Billy'' to us of the
e present generation and since the
e doughty days of the flintlock and the
rhoopskirt, Franklin county has been
known and designated as "the land
of Billy Patterson''-the "'Billy''
whio was hit such a devil of a lick.
t "Of course, there are others, and

osuch an excellent advertisement. I
in venture to say that you might have
in battered the balance of the Patterson
tribe within an ich of his life with
r- out obtaining any such results.'
