In reply, the following was received from Mr. Roberts: - William Patterson was the only orioinal. all-wool. simon-pure. "Billy' who on one occasion was hit. He is the only genuine-beware of imita tions. Another "William.'' which will ,ie probably lead some astray, was only ,d his company name. South Caro e- ina. Be it ordained by the Mayor and J. Aldermen of the Town of New e- berry, South Carolina, in Council i assembled. and by authority of the e same: eSectioni 1. That from and after the passage of this ordinance all tpersons between the ages of eigh 0teen and fifty years in the Town of [t Newberry, S. C., are hereby re d~ quired to perform six days labor Aduring each y'ear upon the streets 0of tile said town under the direc tion of the street overseer. or to eC pay Three Dollars to the Clerk and: ,Treasurer of the Town Council of: the- Town of Newberry each year in lieu thereof, which shall be due and -' payable oil or before the first day a of April. A\ll persons violating ihe pro~ visions of this ordlinance by ilting U pe'Irf the said labor or par the' said comfmutation tax inl li eu thereof. shall. upon conviction thereof, be fined not more than five. dollars or be imprisoned for not more than ten days or sentenced to hard labor on the public works of said Town Provided, that the pro visions of this ordinance shall not apply to persons holding a certifi cate of physical disability from a reputable licensed physician, said certificate not to be over one year old and any person presenting such certificate shall make oath before the said Clerk and Treasurer that such disability prevents him from making a livelihood at his usual avocation: nor to ministers of the gospel in actual charge of a congre gation. teachers employed in the public schools, school trustees, and persons permanently disabled in military service of the State, any person who served in the late war between the States, all persons ac tually employed in the quarantine service of the State, and members of the Fire Department of the: Town of Newberry; Provided, however, that only twenty mem bers of each company of the said department shall be exempt under the provisions of this section, and it shall be the duty of the secretary of each company to file with the Clerk and Treasirer of said Coun cil a list of all members of his com pany on or before the first day of January of each year. Section 3. That all ordinances or parts of ordinances, inconsistent with this ordinance be, and the same is hereby, repealed.
