Be it ordained by the Mayor and dermen of the Town of New rrv, South Carolina. in Council -sembled. and by authority of the mie: Section i. That from and after e passage of this ordinance all rsons between the ages of eigh en and fifty vears in the Town of ewberry. S. C., are hereby re .ired to perform six (lays labor iring each year upon the streets the said town under the direc >n of the street overseer, or to nv Three Dollars to the Clerk and reasurer of the Town Council of e Town of Newberry each year in u thereof, which shall be due and Lable on or before the first day April, Provided, that a receipt in 11 of commutatic tax shall be is ed to any person who shall pay e same prior to the month of pril: Provided. however, that thing herein contained shall be construed as to exempt any per n wvho shall become a resident of e Town of Newberry, at any time any year, from performing the bor or paying the conmmutation x herein required. Section 2. All persons violating e provisions of this ordinance by iling to perform the said labor pay the said commutation tax in u thereof, shall, upon conviction ereof, be fined not more than five lars or be imprisoned for not ore than ten days or sentenced to Lrd labor on the public works of id Town; Provided, that the pro sions of this ordinance shall not sply to persons holding a certifi te of physical disability from a putable licensed physician, said rtificate not to be over one year :1 and any person presenting such rtificate shall make oath before e said Clerk and Treasurer that ch disability prevents him from aking a livelihood at his usual 'ocation; nor to ministers of the spel in actual charge of a congre tion, teachers employed in the iblic schools, school trustees, and :rsons permanently disabled in ilitarv service of the State, any :rson who served in the late war tween the States, all persons ac ally employed in the quarantine rvice of the State, and members the Fire Department of the >wn of Newberrv; Provided, >wever, that only twenty mem rs of each company of the said ~partment shall be exempt under e provisions of this section, and shall be the duty of the secretary each company to file with the lerk and Treasurer of said Coun a list of all members of his com my on or before the first day of muary of each year.
