AN ORDINANCE State of South Carolina, The Town of Newberry. For the purpose of meeting in part the current expenses of the Town government of the Town of Newberry, in the State of South Carolina, for the fiscal year begin ving-january ist, -196, and to meet in part such other indebtedness of said Town as may become due in said fiscal year; Therefore, be it .rdained by the Mayor and Alder men of the Town of Newberry, in said State, in council assembled and by authority of the same: Section r. That no person or persons, firm, corporation or cor porations, shall engage in, prose cute or carry on any calling, trade, :business, occupation or profession hereinafter mentioned within the corporate limits of said Town at any time during said year after the publication of this ordinance with out having first paid to said Town a license or privilege tax therefor as -follows, to wit: A. Gleaning, dressing or dye ing (other than licensed tailors, 2 50 Coal dealers (alone or in connection with other business), 5 00 Contractors or Builders for contracts under $500, 5 00 Contractors or Builders for contracts over $500 and not exceeding $2,500, 1o oo Contractors or Builders for contracts over $2,500 and not exceeding $5,oo0, 1 - Contractors or Builders for contracts over $5,000, 2' Commission Merchants or Commission Brokers, each or each firm and for each place of business, 2; Cotton Mills or Factories. for each $50,000 or trac tional part thereof of its capital stock, 12 Cotton Seed Oil Mills. 5C Cotton Seed Oil Mills that manufacture fertilizers. 6c Cotton Gin and Press, i to 5 gins inclusive, IC Cotton Gin and Press, over 5 gins, for each additional gMn over 5 Cotton Buyer, for each place of business. 10 Cotton Seed Buyier, Cotton Weigher. Conveyancer. drawing deeds mortgages or contracts for compensation (other than licensed lawyers),. D. Dentists or tooth extractors. Dogs, upon each and, every dog, the owner or person upon whose premises the same is kept shall pay the sum of Druggists, licensed as mer chants. E. Exchange, bucket shop (firm, individual or cor poration) carrying on the business of dealing in op tions or futures in cotton, gram, provisions or. other supplies, on margins or otherwise. $ 50 Express Companies, each, for business done within the Town of Newberry, and not included busi ness done for the United States Government, or any business done to.and from points beyond the limits of this state. -50 F. K. Kerosene or other oil com panies having an agency or office in the Town of Newberry, or a stationary or portable tank or tanks for receiving and storing oil, selling or delivering oil within the imits of the said town each, $ 1oc Kerosene Oil Companies or Agencies having no sta tionary or portable tanks but selling in original packages, each, 50 Knitting Mills, 20 L. Laundry, steam, or agent for steam laundry, $ 10 Lawyers, each, shall pay on their income according to the scale of rates fixed for merchants. That for any calling trade, business. occupation or pro Iession not enumerated or provid ed for in this ordinance or any oth er ordinance of said Town now o: force, the license shall be regulate( and imposed by the Town Coun cil of said Town at any meetinc of the same. Section 3. That the Town Coun cil of said Town hereby reserve the right to refuse or revoke an3 license for any cause which ma' seem to it just. Section 4. That any person, firn or corporation making any false o1 fraudulent return, shall upon con, viction be punished as herein afte1 provided for the violation of thi. ordinance or any part thereof. Section 5. That whenever ir this ordinance the term "dealer" i. used the same shall include not onl the principal, but in his, her o1 their absence shall include an3 agent, clerk or employee managing the business respectively referre to; and generally, where a licens< is herein imposed upon any busines. and the same is carried on or con ducted by an agent, clerk or em ployee, such agent, clerk or em ployee shall be subject to the pen alties imposed in this ordinance foi its protection, should the said busi ness be carried on without taking out such license, in the.same man ner as if he, she or they were th< proprietor.or proprietors of sait business. Section 6. Any violation of thi. ordinance or any part thereof shal subject the offender or offenders each to a fine not exceeding on< hundred dollars or to imprisonmeni with or without hard labor upon the streets or other -public works od said Town for a period not exceed ing thirty days, at the discretion a' the court. Section 7. That any person 0: persons, firm or corporation, or th< agent, clerk or employee in charge or managing the. same, who shal engage in, prosecute or carry oi any calling, trade, business, occupa tion or profession upon which a li cense or privilege tax may here after be imposed by the Towr Council of said Towvn, without hav ing taken out a license therefor sha, upon conviction, be each fined in a -sum not exceeding one hundred dollars, or imprisonment with 01 without hard labor upon the streets or other public works of said Towr for a period not exceeding thirty days, at the discretion of the court Section. 8. That each day an: person or persons, firm or corpora tion shall violate this ordinance o1 any part theref, by reason of any failure or refusal to take out an: j.license herein provided .for, shal constitute a separate offense, an<( such offender or offenders shall be for each day's offense subject t< the penalties herein provided. Section 9. That this ordinanc< shall not operate as a repeal of an: ~ordinance of said Town now o: Iforce imposing a license or privi ~'lege tax upon any calling, trade business, occupation or profession Iexcept such part or parts only o said ordinance or ordinances nov of, force as may impose a licens< upon any calling, business, occupa tion or profession. herein, specified named or enumerated. Section 10. This ordinance shal be of force and effect on and af ter the sixth day of January, A. D 196.
