he said today, "is due to great kinc

The Haunted House.
The State, Jan. 10.
This city (Newberry has a sur
enough "haunted house, and th
spook defies all power of polic
clubs and guns, although one ma
is said to have used a silver bulle,
the only kind of ball that will kiL
spirits. This evil spirit threaten
to kill the dusky damsels, mor
dusky than damsel, if they ever g
away .from the house.
Several nights since these dusk
damsels became so frightened at th
doings of the spook that they calle
Policemen Franklin and Carter,
who went and with clubs and gun
tried to drive the evil thing away
but it would not go away.
About three \veeks ago, late a
night, something cam e rapping, s
gently tapping at the door of on
SLizzie Brown and asked to be ad~
mitted. When asked who it wa
that desired admittance, the repl
was, "It is me." "Who is me ?
was the reply from within. "01
Monk, i<t is me, don't you know me
But "me' was.not admitted.
These arid many similar storie
were told about the city, until las
night six darkies, Eliza Strothe:
her uncle Bill Ruff, Tom Smiti
Salliie Garner and Jim Boozer de
cided they would go and see fc
themselves. So they wvent over t
the "haunted house" of Lizzi

Going in, they seated themselve
about the room and began talkin
when presently something like
policeman's club dropped dow

missing the head of one of the co:

Scarcely had it hit the floor be

and Jim Turner ascended the ladde
that leads to the loft.
Scarcely had they landed at th
Shead of the ladder before the lam
was sudenly snatched from tf
hand of Bill Ruff and violent]
thrown to the opposite side of tf
room, and wiith a loud wail Bi
called for help, he was being sever<
ly beaten by the spook. A few se<
onds of this only, when Bill an
Jim both fell to the floor, Bill haa

skinned up places to make muc
headway in running, but Turner

The knocks and bruises are sai
to have been administered by tf
spirit on Bill for some short talk f
had previously given it.
It does not take a very immagin;
tive brain to surmise what the othe
darkies who came with Will Ru
ang Jim Turner did when Ru
first howled for help..
It is said that when you ask i
spirit where it is, it will say, "Ui
der the house," but when you loc
there it answers from the loft<
the house.

however. is only a surmise as Liz- II

grass wvidow or the real thing.

down stream a distance, then put it
back in your mouth and you can
do anything you want, or live any- t
where you please. This is the re- I
ceipt for making witchcraft as giv- t
