All Right At Last.
Detroit News.
Before President Angell, of th
T.-rsity of Michigan, had attaine
Ao 'iis present high position a youn
hopeful entering college was recorr
mended to his consideration:
"Try the boy out, professor; cri
icise 'him and .tell us botih- what yo
hink," the parents said.
To facilitate acquainitance the pr(
fessor took the boy for a walk. Afte
10 mirrutes' silence the youth vencu
ed:
"tFine day, professor."
Yes," with a far-away look.
Ten minutes more and the youn
man, squirming all the time, venturec
"This is -a pleasant iwalk, professor.
"Yes."
For another ten minutes the matr
cuilate boiled to this b,nes and the
blrted out that he thought the
might have rain.
"Yes," and this time thie professc
-went on: "Youngman, we have bee
wal-king together for a half an hou:
ard you have said nothing which wa
not commonplace -and stupid."
"True," answered the boy, his wra
passing this modesty; "and you er
dorsed every word I said."
Then -they laughingly shook hand
and word went 'home from thc prc
fessor that the boy was all right an
that they were great friends.
Too Much For The Man-Eater.
A well known theatrical manage1
according -to the Saturday Evenin
Post, repeats an instance of wIhat th
late W. C. Coup of circus fame one
told him was one of the most amusini
features of the show business-the fa
king in the "side show."
Coup was the owner of a small cir
cus ziat boasted amQn.g its principa
attractions a man-eating ape, allege,
to be ithe largest in captivity. Thi
ferocious beas'r was exhibited chainei
t'o.P6 dead trunk of a tree. in the sid
ow. Early in the day of the firs
rfor-mance of Coup's enterprise a
certain Ohio town, a dount-ryma:
anded the man-eating ape a piece o
bacco, in the 'dhIewing of which th
east evinced th.e greatest satis
ction. 'The word 'was soon passet
round that The ape would chew to
acco; and the result was that sev~
eal plugs were thrown atr him. Uni
4iappily, 'however, one of Mh'ose ha
been filled with cayenne pepper. Th
man-eatinlg .ape 'bit it; .then, howlin'
with indignation, snapped the .chail
that bound him to the tree and mad

"Lave me a'r 'im!" yelled the ap

<Fortunately for the .countryma:
and for Magillicuddy, too, the man
eatinig ape was restrained by th
*bystanders in ti'nae to prevent a kill

"Rubbing It In."
When Mrs. piorse, after a lapse c
ithirty. years. met 'her 'old schoolmate
Mrs. Graham, in the guite of a sunm
mer visitor to Aiklersfield. she mad
up her mind to one thing: Lydia Gra
ham's measure of worldly prosperit;
had ben large, but not for one momen
would Mary Ann Morse allow her t,
feel "se up."
It was with 'the intention of re
ducing any possible pride that migh
*be lurking behind Lydia Graham'
placid countenance that Mrs. Mors
-held her off at arm's length when t.h
first affectionate greeting had bee.
exchanged.
"H.ow fat you've grown, Lyddy!
said Mary Ann Morse, holdiin ghe

Mrs. Grah-am 'smiled contentedly
and Mrs. Morse saw that 'her t'hrus
had done no 'harm.
"And yet-and yet you're wrinkle<
in spite of it," sai.d this determinel
old friend: and then she gave Lydi:
Graha:m's flushed cheeks a consolin,
kiss.
Progressive Appreciation.
Some of 'the country flowers illus
trate the truth that "the prophet i
not without 'honor save in his owl
country" as 'well as any person coula
possibly do it.
-'One morning a summer resideni
started from Bnookby with a bunci
.of flowers in her hand.
"Going to tote that whiteweed int<
the city?" inquired the man who drov
h.n to the stin;. wm evident 'scorr
"Yes," said the young -woman, quite
unmoved by his opinion.
e On the train she was joined by an
d other young woman who had former
g ly lived in the city, but had married
E a Brookby man a few years before.
"iThose are pretty daisies you 'have,"
she said, tolerantly.
u "Yes, I -think they are," said the
summer visitor, smiling to herself.
An hour later -she handed the flow
r ers to a friend in a -busy city office.
"Oh, what lovely marguerites!"
cried the recipient.
"I'm glad you like them." said the
young woman. quietly. "I thought
g you would."
Knowledge that she has a bewitch
ing smile has much to do with a wo
. man's cheerfulness.
n One is beginning to acquire wisdom

whole show.
