I Grainger, a local Baptist preacher an farmer, was shot from ambush an killed today while working in his fiel< The only cause that can be assigt ed is that Grainger >had brought int the "Dead Stretch," a section so-cal ed between Bayboro an<l Loris, tw negroes to work on his place and a lowed them to sleep at his hous< This is supposed to have enraged certain elem.ent which is said to has declared that no negro should conm into that section at the risk of his lif< Coroner Burroughs has gone to thi scene, and bloodhounds have bee asked for to track the assassins. Some of tihese are scars left from great social wounds and others are freshly bruised parts that have sprung suddenly upon our social e body. Sofne of these effects may be I and can advisedly be eliminated sud . denly; while others will best be mov ed by gradual measures. To my mind this is the case of the dispensary sys 3 tem in South Carolina. Hasty meas ures that have to do with great politi cal questions are never safest for our body politic for so soon as they are d enacted there are thase resultant ills f that are derived from this rapid transit method. which always leave us in a worse fix than before. There is an old Latin maxim which to my mind is of Divine inspiratioti: "Vox populi 'vox Dei." I believe in this and I believe in giving ear to n the voice- of the people. The legis y lature of the state of South Carolina supposed to be tthe compactea voice r. of the people of our state has by its own 'act declared to the public that for the present at least the dispensary s system is a proper and advantageous system for the people throughout our v borders. It is better for the people instead of having individual count s y rebelling aganst' the state to let the coun:y or counties claiming tc--have judgment better than counties multi e plying ten or more times their num d ber. convince by intelligent debate all e outstanding counties and then let the _representatives of the people order rwhat the people want done. [. The ancients used to say, "If you will tear downt my fence build me a better; if you cannot build me a bet ter one tihen destroy not that which is the best I have and profiteth me presently." I read the other day from our town paper how that the county derived this year from the dis pensary sys: em for school purposes n Sr3.5o4.18; and the town of .Newberry received alone six thousand dollars. Another time we read from a reliable sotirce that if tihe county would sub I tract $6,ooo received this year from ) the dispensary that up to date it d would have a deficiency of $3.6po. d Now may I ask from a financial point j of view what principle has ever been - in vogue in our state and in Newber o ry county that has worked half so ad vantageously as this? What has been oso savory to our educational pro gress? What have we 'seen tihat promises an improvement in tle mor a al status suggested by anti-parties? e Tearing down wvhat we have wherein e are the antics proposing to build for ,us in its stead better. The people of e South Carolina are not fools; none n need ever fear that when they are shown a better w:4.y to symmetrical improvement than what tihey have, they will accept that; and until they aare shown that better way proof posi _ tively,. then th'ey are certain to hold r on to what they have. -Some argue that there are corrupt L men at tthe head of this present sys tem and for that reason it ought to be overthrown. I affirm that there are corrtipt men in the church and at the head of that Divine establishment, but that is no reason why the cthurch I should be annwhilated.
