our national being. Here is found that admixture of moral and physi cal forces which go to make up the true idealism: and here is found that exact sense of justice which, at last, must set in judgment in the case of labor -against capital. Here is found a race of men who come of sires trained in statecraft. with the glor ious heritage of the mighty past as its inspiration, and an inherent cour age to do the right. To the south must be delegated the duty of raising the banner of a true conservative Americanism around which the true patriotism of the nation may rally. To the accomplishment of this end, the south must purge herself of her weakness. The spirit of materialism must be met and checked. We must southernize the nation, rather than permit the nation to commercialize us. The physical and moral develop ment of the people must go for ward in unison; the one must not be 1 allowed to enslave the other. The opportunist must be relegated and 1 expediency must give way to an ad herence to ideas, and it must be taught that devotion to principle is the highest consideration of public 1 or private life. Our part in the Union must be recognized. The constitu- 1 tion and flag must be regarded as our 1 constitution and flag. Exaggerated fears as to doubtful dangers must be discounted. Her political solidarity must be broken, in order that the most abso lute freedom of discussion may be promoted. We must show our fitness to lead in the struggle for the main tenance of law by stamping out law lessness umong people, and by insist ing that justice shall be meted out by courts and juries. Our young manhood must be taught the duty each owes to his country as a citizen, and that such duty increases in pro portion to his education. When we have done these things, the south will 'again take her place as a leader of national thought, and her states manship will again be the statesman ship of the nation. Very Appropriate to The Season. There never were a better people than the people of South Carolina. They have had bitter enemies and they have been -occasionally much maligned, but when it comes to the' highest grace of all the grace of lov ing kindness, they cannot be beaten this side of heaven. Pardon my par tiality for I really think so. Now all this sweet talk has a pur pose-it is a prelude to a suggestion to the people of this generous state to set their generous hearts to task before the summer vacation begins. And it is about to begin just now. Have you thought of your little orphan brothers and sisters? There are two hundred of them'in the Pres byterian Orphanage at Clinton (Thornwell.) There are two hundred in the Baptist Orphanage at Green wood, (Connie Maxwell.) There are nearly that many at the M~ethodist Orphanage, (Epworth,) at Columbia. I know something of the condition of these denominational homes, for I have a standing welcome at all of + 11 enware, T KitchenU * -E 4r them, and who ought to know them better than I. I know that at this season of the year they are always sorely pressed for the necessities of life, and this little love letter to my brethren of the different denomina tions is to suggest that each one of you send at once, your check or a barrel of flour, or rice or molasses Dr even a sack of grits to the orphan age you love best. June and July are he best times to send now. Every joy with a heart ought to feel it a privilege to do it.
