Mavor Gibbes, of Columbia, has re

At a special meeting of the board
. directors held in Greenville on
Saturday, Mr. B. E. Beattie was elect
ed president and treasurer of the
Piedmont Manufacturing company,
as successor to the ILe James. L.
Urr.
It is estimated that between I,000
and 1,500 firms, incorporated in this
state, failed to make out their returns
to the comptroller general and are
liable for the penalty. It is expected
that many will go out of business
rather than pay the penalty of $5oo.
Mr. Moore, a mining expert from
Colorado, after an examination of Mr.
J. D. Nisbet's plantation, in Lancas
ter county, reported that he had
found gold in abundance and predict
ed that it would be one of the richest
-mines in the country.
A negro boy in Darlington stole
Stenographer Covington's bicycle
while Mr. Covington- was in the court
house. The boy was captured while
-riding the wheel in the country,
brought back to Darlington, tried
next day and sentenced to the state
eformatory for twelve months.
The s:ate house commission has
authorized the architect to advertise
for bids for a new rooi of slate, tin
or terra cota. After the bids are re
ceived the commission will consider
which of the styles is best to accept.
It is estimated that the new roof will
cost from $2.00 to $3,000.
Bob Small, white, who was convict
ed in Darlington of the murder of a
negro named Frank Scott, has been
sentenced to be hanged on Friday,
May 5. John Noll, white, accessory
to the killing of Scott, and convicted
of murder with recommendation to
mercy, was sentenced to life in the
-penitentiary.
A commission has been issued by
the secretary of state for a charter
for the Saluda River Power company.

Jim Lamer, a negro, was killed

carried a shotgun and when Mr. Cor

Crlev shot the negro dead with his

Bob Sinali and John Noll. two white
men who killed a negro named Frank
Scott, in Darlington county, several
weeks ago. were tried in Darlington
on Frdiav and convicted of murder,
the jury recommending Noll to mer
cv. The case. it is stated. was a bad
one against the defendants. it being
shown that the white men met the
negro on the highway and brutally
murdered him without provocation.
The prisoners were ably defended.
At the opening meeting of the cam
paign in Charleston for solicitor of
the new 9th circuit and for member,
of the house of representatives from
Charleston county; held on Saturday
night. a lively spat occurred between
Mr. W. Turner Logan. candidate for
solicitor, and County Chairman Dan
ie! L. Sinkler. The lie was passed.
but the gentlemen were kept from
blows.

Watson is making material additions
to the state's exhibit in Columbia.
The woods and minerals that were in
the state's exhibit at the Charleston
exposition and which have been in
the custody of State Geologist Earle
Sloan, have been received in Colum
bia and added to the collection. Mr.
Watson is having the material ar
ranged and the woods polished and
these articles make a considerable ad
dition to the already promising ex
hibit of the resources of the state. N
Under the terms of the recent act J.
regarding the state historical commis
sion the members of the commission
were to draw for the length of their
terms. Curious as it may seem the
older members on the board drew the
longer t-rms. The terms are: Wil
liar A. Courtenay, ten years; James
E. Tindal, eight years; W. C. Benet,
six years; Henry A. M. Smith, four
years; John B. Cleveland, two years. c
Capt. Courtenay, who has done morea
:han any one man in South Carolina
for such work as the historical com
mission is doing, drew the longest
term.
The city of Anderson has been en
joined, in the United States circuit
court in Charleston, on complaint of
the Western Union Telegraph corn
pany, restraining the authorities from
proceeding with the collection of the )
license against the co:npany. The or
der directs the defendants to sho0w c
cause on March 21 why the tempo- I
rary injunction should not issue. The
c' mplatint of the company alleges
that the license has been raised to I
