ANIMALS' WANDERINGS.
Country Mouse and Town Mouse
Fable Has Foundation in
Fact.
London Answers.
The fable of the country mouse and
the town mouse has a foundation in
tact. Mice occsionally migrate in
large numbers when food grows
scarce and travel consideraole dis
tance to fresh houses. Farmers in a
part of Perthshire had a good reason
to become aware of this fact when a
couple of years ago vast swarms or
mice invaded their cornields at har
vest time.
But the mouse onvl travels when i:
has to. The rat. on the contrary.
seems to take a yearly outing, in very
much the same iashion as do liuman
)eings. Rats are the most migratory
creatures in the world. Troops of
rats leave :he towns at the end of
summer and spend a month or two
;n the country, apparently in order to
enjoy the change of food which the
country affords at that time of the
year in the way of fresh fruit and
grain. Before the cold weather sets
in they are all back again in their old
quarters.
Reindeer migrate with the same
regularity as swallows. They move
south when winter sets in, but as soon
as ever the sn.ow begins to melt they
travel steadily north, sometimes for
as much as a thousand miles.
To end a holiday by deliberate sui
-cide is so strange a phenomenon that
for a long time naturalists looked up
on the stories of the migration of the
lemmings as an improbable fiction.
Yet the facts are beyond dispute. At
irregular intevals these ratlike crea
tures start out from their homes in
the fastnesses of northern Scandinav
ia in huge droves numbering tens of
-thousands and travel steadily south
ward. Death pursues them in a hun
dred forms. Hawks and other birds
of prey hover above them. Thous
ands are drowned in rivers. Yet the
rest struggle on until they reach the
sea. They do not stop. They plunge
in, swim out and struggle on until at
last their strength fails and they
drown. Not one ever returns from
this journey of death.
Eighteen Years Old, Seven Feet Tall.
Nashville Banner.
Near Parsons, Tenn., there lives a
~mdst remarkable young man, a ver
itable giant for his age. His name is
Arnold, and he is not yet 18 years of
age..
He stands 7 feet even in his stock
ing feet and wears a No. 13 shoe. In
the community in which the young
curosity resides he is called "Big
Six." The boy is rather sensitive in
regard to his gigantic size, and is
rarely ever seen on the streets of the
village. His parents are both average
sized people.

Startling But True.
People the world over were horrified
on learning of the burning of a Chicago
theater in which nearly six hnndred
people lost their lives, yet more than
five times this nnmber or over 3,000
people died from pneumonia in Chicago
durmg the same year, with scarcely a
passing notice. Every one of these
ca-es of pneumonia resulted from a
cold and could have been prevented by
the timely use of Chamberlain's Cough
'Remedy. A great many who had every
reason to fear pneumonia have warded
it off by the promp- ise of this remedy.
The following is azv instance of this
sort: "Too much cannot be said in
favor of Chamberlain's Cough Remedy,
and especially for colds and influenza.
I know that it cured my daughter,
Laura, of a severe cold, and I believe
saved her life when she was threatened
with pneumonia.' W. D WILCOX.
