The North Carolina legislature has
received a favorable report on the
bill to prohibit bucket-shops. The
law conforms to a similar Missouri
law and Governor Folk sent the leg
islature a message commending it.
Ex-Mayor Samuel McCue will
have to die on the gallows. The ap
peal on the writ of error was denied,
and there is now no possibility of re
vision of the sentence. The doomed
man was overcome by the news and
burst into tears. "I will get justice
in heaven," he said.
There were only three starters in
the fifty-mile automobile race at
Ormond last week. The winds and
tides conspired to make the event a
failure, and practically succeeded.
The beach was very unfavorable for
racing. The race was marred by a
series of minor accidents, and only
one of the devil-engines finished.
A south-bound passenger train and
a north-bound freight on the N. C. &
St. L. railway, met in collision in
Tennesse, on Friday, killing four
trainmen and injuring several pas
sengers. The trains met on a straight
track. Responsibility for the acci
dent has not yet been placed.
Advices from throughout the or
ange belt show that 5oo,ooo boxes of
oranges and grape fruit remaining on
the trees, about 75 per cent., have
been frozen and made unsalable. A
large portion of this loss falls upon
the buyers, who bought the crops on
the trees, although some of the plan
tiers themselves have been heavily hit.
The temperature in some portions of
the orange belt went as low as 18.
The committee at the Cotton
Growers convention in New Orleans
decided to hold the next meeting in
Asheville, N. C. It was decided that
the cotton growers of each respec
tive precint should meet on Feb. II
and that the county conventions
should be held on Feb. 16., and the
various state and territorial conven
tions should meet at the state capi
tals on Feb. 21.
William Walters, an Arizona
gambler, walked into a saloon at No
gales, Arizona, on Friday and wich
out a wor opened fire upon a crowd
of poker players seated at a table. He
shot the leader twice through the
head, killed two other men, and then
turned the gun upon himself with fa
tal effect. The cause of his deed is
unknown, except that he was out of
work and was despondent.
Judge Swayne, with counsel, ap
peared in the senate on Friday to
make answer to the summons in
connection with the impeachment.
He was represented by two former
United States senators. They asked
an~d were granted a week more of
time in which to make ready and
complete the responses, and the real
beginning of the trial was fixed for
February 1o. During the settling of
affairs the galleries were crowded.
Reports of the situation in the far
east are sensational and conflicting.
It is stated in some of the press dis
patches 'chat Kuropatkin has been
succes'sful in his operations along the
front. and is now odvancing toward
the Japanese. Another story, eme
nating from Rome, has it that the
Russian army has been ordered home
because of 'the smouldering and po
tential revolution. This latter re
port, however, is not creditd. The
news from St. Petersburg, up to Sun
day, was very meagre, and tended to
show that affairs at the capital were
quiet temporarily at least.
Her Explanation.
Youth's Companion.
In a Pennsylvania town where the
Friends abound a prim old Quaker
spinster one day attended the mar
riage of her grandnephew, a young
person who had in the course of his
twenty-one years received much
needed discipline at her hands.
The old lady was at her best on
this festive occasion, and at a pause
in the wedding breakfast her young
relative looked over at her with a be
guilinig smile.
"Tell us why thee never married,
Aunt Patience." he said, teasingly.
"That is soon 'told, William,"
said the old Quakeress, calmly, ."It
is because I was not as easy pleased

be hanged instead of serving a peni
tentiary sentence.

Curing a Smoker.
London Tit-Bits.
A wise mother caught her little
boy smoking a cigarette the other
day. Instead of inverting him over
her knee and nearly spanking the life
out of him she said:
"Johnny, dear, I see you are get
ting quite a big little man. Come
away in, and I will give you one of
papa's big cigars to smoke."
So she marched Johnny away into
papa's study and sat him down to
smoke one of papa's cigars.
She sat down opposite and watch

eyes yellow and his hands dropped
helplessly, and as a little later she
ministered to him she had the sat

promise that he would never, never
smoke again until he was older.
