Secretary Hester's last weekly cot ton statement shows for the twenty days of January a decrease under last year of 178,ooo, and a decrease under the same period year before last of 128,ooo bales. It is semi-officialiy announced that the Austro-German commercial trea ty will be signed in the immediate iuture. Many difficulties which stood in the way of the instrument have been overcome. Robert Randall, delegate to the United W6rkers' convention in In dianoplis , who cherged President Mitchell with having sold out to the operators during the recent Colora do strike, has been expelled from the organization by the action of the na tional convention. Reports during the latter part of last week showed that there have been several disasters lately in Ba haman waters. A Dutch steamer and two American vessels were wrecked last week. One crew was probably lost. The report says that friction may follow over the salvage of the Dutch steamer. President Castro, of Venezuela has decided to give a negative reply to the representation of the United States. The president left the capital city for a week with the evident de sire and intention of putting off the answer for some time to come. From his attitude it is feared that the Vene zuelan situation may develope serious complications. A report from Kansas states that a Kansas editor has been killed by Mar shal J. H. Tillman. The trouble start ed by Tillman whipping the son of the editor for being out after the rirging of curfew bell. The editor replied by an editorial which Tllman considered personal. Tillman went to the editor's office, shot him, and then suicided. Senator Reed Smoot determined to take the stand himself in the senate investigation, and will not wait for the testimony of the other witnesses now enroute for Utah. It is said that his. frankness has made a good im pression on the committee. The ex amination of Senator Smoot lasted all day Friday. Mr. Smoot declared that he had taken no oath that inter f erred with his loyalty to the coun try. Defective. Detroit Free Press. Items of More or Less Interest Con densed Throughout the State. Prof. W. K. Tate, of Charleston, is delivering a series of lectures at the South Carolina college. Polo is a very popular game in Camden, and many spirited games are being played between visitors and Camden men. Col. J. J. Dragon, of Hartsville, rep resenting the Pee Dee Historical so ciety, delivered a delightful and in 5tructive lecture in the armory at Darlington last week. M.elton M. Wells was found un :onscious about two miles from Sum merton on last Friday, and died bout four hours later at the home of is brother. The cause of his death was not known. There have been three incendiary ires within the last three weeks in Lancaster county, and the people of that section are becoming much larmed. Three arrests have been made. The town of Sumter was visited last week with two fires. One de troyed a negro house. The other was more serious, destroying and amaging two buildings in which restaurants and a grocery store were ituated, and creating a loss of about 5,ooo, partly covered by insurance. Edgefield was much shocked last week by the death of Cashier J. L. Caughman, of the Farmers' bank. .r. Caughman was only 35 years of ige, and in the prime of a useful car er. He was one of Edgefield's most substantial citizens. Death was due o heart failure. Senator B. R. Tillman has left Washington for the south, in an ef ort to rec_er his health. He has )een sufferirg with a severe cold for some time and the unusually severe winter at the national capital has mugmented his sickness. He goes irst to Trenton, and unless he gets )etter, he may go still farther south. A negro woman living on the out kirts of Greers had some salts in a >ottle at the bottom of which there was a little nux vomica. The womas :ook the last of the salts from the >ottle, gave some to her child and :ook the rest herself. The child died, md the woman is very ill. At the National Good Roads con venion in Jacksonville last week Senator A. C. Latimer, of South Carolina, was given quite an ovation. Anderson Mail. The Charleston News and Courier rises to remark: "The imperialistic endencies of the city of Anderson in building 200 resdences in twelve months are altogether to be com mended."
