anecdote of Mr. Barclay a good old
Scotchman in Columbia a memb -r of
Dr. Palmers church. When Dr Pal
men preached Mr. Barclay enclosed
hiinse'i snugly in his pew and dozed
away; when another preacher was in
the pulpit, with ears erect an-l all at
tenticn he watched the divine and
when :atisfied that his the logy was
strictly Calvinistic, resumed his -lum
bers; on being interrupted why he did
so he rplied "he knew Dr. Palmer
was &:u!y orthodox, didn't know
about the other fellows, he had to

At one time I was very regular in
my attendance at this church, so muc,

devotion, that I was attached to some

Fronting upon what is now called
McKibben street was the residence

M. T. M ,ndenhalI and family situat
ed in a fine grove. They were of
Quaker descent, but had abandoned
the Quaker shad bellied coat, broad
brimmed hat, and the neat, beautiful
dress of the Quaker girls (I never
looked at a Quaker maiden vwith-.her
new dress, but I thought she bras the
sweetest thn.j world,. to me
it was most attractive.
O'Neall in the annals, pays a most
lovir-g tribute t<- Dr. Mendenhall. I
nedonly say he was a gentleman of
te old ,schoo l. the best school of the.
renl geiiintmn. I ever got tangleC

inalthis faulty world. Their daugh
ter, Miss Pauline, was a rare sweet
girl, sweet tempered loving, gentle
and attractive. James Kirk Menden
khall was a splendid noble boy; the
only one of my old Newberry school
mates that became a preacher of the
everlasting gospel and whose loving
tones called sinners to wvalk in the
light.
Dr. Mendenhall's residence was one
of the largest and best in the old vil
lage and where boarded the principal
of the Female academy, who gave
to the grove the name Halcyon, and
also a great lady Miss Saxon the mus
iteacher.
* How I love to dwell upon the good
folks of the old town. In my next I
hope to meander through the old vil
lage and as far as Hunts cross road.

They had at Covngton. Ga.. re
cently, "a horse swapping day." And
they had plenty of swapping besides
that of horses, and lots of fun. It is
a great thing in this world to meet
together and4 SWay and have inn. 1i
a swaping day could he widen-d i
its scope. and take inl all farm animnals,
it really might be made quite usefuil
ive overplus of one thing to fill up by
swapping for things that he was short
on-one kind of fowl, for instance, for
another kind, or one kind of cattle for
another kind. If each county would
set aside a day as "swapping day,"
and meet at the county site, and ex
change th.ings all around, we believe
roal good might be ccomplished, and
delightful acquaintanceship be achiev
ed.

Sec. 2. That for any calling,
trade, business, occupation, or pro
fession not enumerated or provided
for in this ordinance or any other
ordinance of said Town now of force,
the license shall be regulated and
imposed by the Town Council of said
Town at any meeting of the same.
Sec. 3. That the Town Council of
said Town hereby reserves the right
to refuse or revoke any license for
any cause which may seem to it just.
Sec. 4. That any person, firm or
corporation making any false or
fraudulent return, where a return is
necessary or required under this or
dinance, shall, upon conviction, be
punished as hereinafter provided, for
the violation of this ordinance or any
part thereof.
Sec- 5. That whenever in this or
dinance the term "dealer" is used
the same shall include not only the
principal, but in his, her or their ab
sence shall include any agent, clerk'
or employee managing the business
respectively referred to; and general
ly, where a license is herein imposed
upon any business and the same is
carried on or conducted by an agent,
clerk or employee, such agent, cleik
or employee, shall be subject to the
penalties imposed in this ordinance
for its violation. should the said bus
iness be carried on without taking
out such license in the same manner
as if he, she, or they were the pro
prietor or proprietors of said busi
ness.
Sec. 6. Any violation of this ordi
nance or any part thereof shall sub
ject the offender or offenders each
to a fine not exceeding one hundred
dollars, or to imprisonment with or
without hard labor upon the streets
or other public works of said Town\
for a period not exceeding thirty
days, at the discretion of the court.
Sec. 7. That any person or per
sons, firm or corporation, or the
agent, clerk, or employee in charge
of or managing the same, who shall
engage in, prosecute or carry-on any
calling, trade, business, occupation,
or profession upon which a license or
privilege tax may hereafter be An
posed by the Town Council of
said Town, without first having
taken out a license therefor, shall, up
on conviction, be each fined in a sum
not exceeding one hundred dollars,
or imprisoned with or without hard
labor up.on the streets or other public
works of said Town for a period not
exceeding thirty days, at the discre
tion of the court.
Sec. 8. That each day any person
or persons, firm or corporation, shall
violate this ordinance or any part
thereof, by reason of any failure or
refusal to take out any license herein
provided for, shall constitute a sp
arate offense, and such offender, or
offenders, shall be for each day's of
fense subject to the penalties herein
provided.
Sec. 9. That this ordinance shall
not operate as a repeal of any ordi
nance of said Town now of force
imposing a license or privilege tax
upon any calling, trade, business, oc
cupation or profession except such
part or parts only, of said ordinance
or ordinances now of force as may
impose a license upon any calling,
business, occupation or profession
force and effect on and after the sixth
day of January. 1905,.
