The Way the Piece of Paper Worried

Success.
Thomas A. Eidson once told a
friend the story of his first acquain
tance with any big sum of money. It
was when he was struggling with his 1
earlier invention, and he had about as
clear an idea of the value of a bank
check as the man in the moon. He
kad finally sold his patent on the gold
and stock indicator to the Western
Union Telegraph. company and had
called at its office to close the deal. c
After a few preliminaries he was given s
a check for $40,ooo. He eyed it cur
iously and appeared to be puzzled b
what to do with it. Observing his s
perplexity, General Lefferts, then
president of the Western Union, told 4
him that if he would go to the Bank ]
of America, in Wall street, he could
get the cash on his check.
"So I started," said Eidson, "after
carefully folding up the check and
went toward Wall street. So uncer
tain was I in regard to that way of
doing business that I thought while
on the way that if any man should
come up to me and offer me two crisp
$i,ooo bills for that piece of paper I
would give him the check very quick
ly."
On his arrival at the Bank of Amer- i
ica he half tremblingly shoved his t
check out to the cashier. The latter
scrutinized it closely, gave him a d

ried back to the office of the Western
Union and said he could not get any
money. A clerk was sent to the bank
with him to identify him.
"This man," said the clerk, "is Mr.
Thomas A. Eidson,to whose order thle
check is drawn."
"Why, certainly, Mr. Eidson," said
the cashier. "How would you like
your money-in what shape?"
"Oh, any way to suit the abnk; it d
doesn't make any difference to me, so
long.as I get my money."
Eidson was given $4o,ooo in large
bills. After dividing the roll into two
wads of $20,ooo each he stuffed one
inlto each trousers pocket and made all
speed out of Wall street. The next
.day he began work on his first New
York laboratory.
A Difference.
Judge John 3. DeHaven of San
Francisco, wished in a recent address
to point out the importance of trifles,
says an exchange.
