Annual Report of State Geologist
VariedMineral Wealth Being
Explored-Valuable New
Finds.
Mr. Earle Sloan. state geologist,
has filed with the governor his re
port for the year 1904. The report is
technical in its nature but contains
much interesting matter. Two months
were devoted to the exploration of
territory adjacent to certain coastal
rivers not heretofore fully treated.
"There in connection with interest
ing deposits of economic value."
writes Mr. Sloan. "I discovered two
formations. the equivalents of which
have been recognized in but few lo
calities in the United States.' These
are marls. one of the oligocene pe'riod
and the cocene pcriod. The former
is on the Savannah river and the latter
on the Black at its confl-uence with
the Black Mingo.
"The most promising work, how
ever," writes Mr. Sloan. "consisted in
the discovery of phosp1hate rock in
the form of phosphatized marl, torn
from the bed of the ocean by the
waves and stranded along the beach
of Horry county."' He spys that this
shows 57 per cent. of calcic potash
and the bowlders are large. He
thinks there are la-ge quantities on
the narrow strip of land between the
Waccamaw river and the ocean,
northeast of Conway.
In this same region he :'ound a
compact, peaty formation about 28
inches thick which contains a little
more than 3 per cent. of ammonia.
"If expected developments disclose
this peat in good quantity, it should
afford a valuable neighborhood ferti
lizer, representing an ammonia value
of $7.50 per ton. in addition it would
be a humus for sandy soils."
Mr. Sloan continues Ibt from
July to December his field work had
been confined to Piedmont counties
along a more or less consistent geo
logical zone-Oconee, Anderson,
Pickens, Abbeville, Laurens, Union,
Spartanburg, Cherokee, York and a
part of Greenville. He studied the
highly important tin deposits of Cher
okee county, which, he says, "consti
tutes the most valuable tin area yet
discovered in the United States." He
found heretofore unnoted localities
where there are valuable formations
of limestone, marble and feldspar.
There has been marked increase of
interest in the gold mining industry
and*the following are now active pro

sulphurets, This will stimulate the
development of a number of p)roper
ties in the Piedmont which heretofore
have resisted successful treatment.
While examining the formations in
the Piedmont country he studied
-other extensive deposits of mineral
ores, such as monazite, zircon, corun
dum, asbestos, graphite, mica. abrasine
garnet, superior iron ores. pyries,
manganese, barytes, clays and struc
tural stone, all of which will be dig
cussed in' a volume nearly ready for
the press; "A catalogue of the min
eral localities of South Carolina."
He declares that great interest has
been manifested in the monagraph on'
the clays of South Carolina. a pub
lication presented to the legislature
last year.
Mr. Sloan explains that there is not
time for him to make quantitative an
alyses o.f minerals submitted by in
dividuals although he does so when
ever the requests come from the par
ticuilar zone in which he is working.
He has no assistance other state
geologists have. Mr. Sloan explains
that he was called into consultation
by the legislative committee appoint
ed to consider the advisability of es
tablishing in this state a phosphate
mining and fertilizer manufacturing
industry with the use of convict labor.
Mr. Sloan states that he was unable
to go into the matter thoroughly as
the committee was given too little
time.
He recalls the fact that when called
upon he urged the state phosphate
commission not to reduce the royalty
on phosphate rock. The beds in this

when the phosphate rock in other
states is used up then "the strength
of this state's poseS,ions will come
into full fruition."
He acknowledges wi:h pleasure the
ass;stance given by the chemical lab
oratory at Clemson, and to the Smith
sonian Institute for occasional field
assistance. It is expected that the
United States geological survey will
co-operate during the year 1905 in
the work of stream measurements.
The report as a whole should be
read by every member of the legisla
ture for it is full of an atmosphere of
hope for the future and shows that
South Carolina's hills are not entirely
barren.
