X. H. AULL, EDITOR. Entered at the Postoffice at New berry, S. C., as.second class matter. FRIDAY, JULY 29. The War in The Far East. There has been veTy little news of a definite character during the past few days from the struggle in the far east. There has been no decisive ;engagement or even decisive move ment on the part of either side. and the present indications are that the struggle will (rag its weary length for many days. unless an unexpected complication should arise. or unless Russia. becoming over-burdened with her internal dissensions. should be come wearv of the c,nflict and end it in sinme manner. Reports late yes terday afternoon indicated :ha the complications between Russia and Great Britain. brought about by the seizure of British ships and the sink ing of one British vessel, the Knight Commander, by Russian vessels in the Red Sea. had been satisfactorily adjusted. Russia having met Great Britain's demands in the matter. It seems to be a fact. however, that very little can be judged from the re ports which we are receiving of the war. Owing to the difficulty which the newspaper correspondents at the .front have in getting any news of a definite character. and the still great er difficulty which they encounter when they try to get it through the press censors, the reports are delayed and transfigured and very meagre. For this reason and for others there is very little foundation on which to build an opinion as to the possible outcome of the struggle or its length. That Russia has about as much to contend with at home as she can manage is evidenced by the assassi nation of her minister of the interior in the streets of St. Petersburg yes terday morning. The empire of the Czar has ever been rent with internal dissensions and the seeds of anarchy there find fertile soil. The investigation of the Eutawville lynching is still being carried forward. If there are not some arrests and some punishment in this matter. it might not be in had taste for Gover nor Heywvard to reqtuest'the resigna tion of sonme of the offncers of Ber keley county. Solicitor H-Iildebrand, it will be recalled, attended the in quest and stated in his report to the~ governor that the acting coroner and( everv~ 'ne who heard the testimony wvere agreed as to the personnel of the guilty parties. It is not long now until the county' campaign will open up again. New berry county.is to be congratulated upon the good feeling which has characterize'd the campaign this year. But then Newberry cotunty campaigns are always pleasant. The .recent rains throughout the county have wonderfully improved the crop prospects. At. New Hope Church. There will two sermons at New Hope on Sunday and likewise through the meeting. J. K. McKain. Pastor. Barbecue at Longshore. J. M. Counts will give a barbecue at Longshore on Autgust 4th. con gressional campaign day. A Good Game. A close and interesting game of ball at Chappells in Tttesday resulted in a score of 5 and at the end of the eleventh innitng. The contesting teams were from Chappells atnd GreenwooId. Criouch. of Siliver Street. tossedl the 1phere for Chtappells. Messrs. John C. Gogganis. Jr.. and Harvey Cabanies, both of this city. The game was one of the fastest seen anywhere in the county this season, as is evident from the tie score at the end of eleven innings. Butler Squelched an Interrupter. The late Benjamin F. Butler was one of the most tactiul speakers whc kept an audience in a roar. and whc w(in their good will. even if he did not capture their votes, by the un -orthodox character of his political preaching. During wnc (if these good fashioned pt-litical meetings for wvhich Massachusetts was noted But Ier in an outburst (if patriotism trul\ .made the eagle scream." Then. for a diversion. he engaged in a delect able occupation of "pulling the tail' of the British li-mn. just for pure en joyment of hearing that bad temper ed and sorely harrassed animal growl. At -ine point in his address he quoted a certain English newspaper as au thority fi-r his assertion. A burly. red faced man in the au dience. who had interrupted him once or twice before. cried out. in a heavy bass v4)ice: "I din't kno)w tif any such paper. Butler paused in his remarks. and. after the silence had become impres sive. he walked to the center of the 4tage. and pointing the foretinger of his right hand at the offender, said. slowly and emphatically: Pray. my dear sir. do not interrupt the proceedings of this meeting, for if you begin to tell us what you don't know there will be no time for any thing else." The roar of genuine laughter that followed completely squelched the disturber. who kept silence during the remainder of the meeting. The cradle that is rocked by the hand contains the force that rules the world. If you would be popular, don't tell your troubles. NOTICE. A regular communication of Amity Lodge. No. 87. A. F.
