E. H. AULL, EDITOR. - Entered at the Postoffice at New berry, S. C., as second class matter. FRIDAY, JULY 8, 1904. The county campaign so far has been pleasant and devoid of special features. The candidates are a jolly set and seem to be enjoying the heat and the barbecue hash and all of them 'expect to be elected. It is good to be hopeful and not to cross the bridge of sighs until it is reached. Certainly no man would go through all the pleasures of a summer campaign with its sunshine and barbecue meats unless he expected the approval of his fellow citizens. It is stated in the dispatches from St. Louis that three of the delegates from South Carolina voted against voting for Parker on the first ballot. While they were not instructed the sentiment of the convention which sent them as delegates was very strongly for Parker. The crops in those sections of the county where we have been during the past few days are needing rain. In some places there have been good rains and the cotton is looking very well and as a rule is in good condi tion, but the corn crop generally has the appearance of a very short yield. The rains have been scattering and unless good seasons come very soon the crops are going to be short. The News and Courier in a recent issue noted with regret that Senator Mower had withdrawn from the race for re-election to the state senate from Newberry county, and in its issue of yesterday morning said: "The Newberry Evening Telegram says: *The News and Courier could not have paid Mr. Mower a higher compliment than it did' when it said that -Mr. Mower has the satisfaction of having served his people well.' It is for this reason the News and Courier regretted much to note the fact that Mr. Mower had determined to retire from the race for senator fr6m Newberry county." Newbery county has never had a more careful or painstaking or more able representative in the senate than Mr. Mower. Musical Organization. A musical organization has been re cently formed by several young peo ple of the town. It meets once a week and is making. excellent music. The present organization is as follows: Miss Mazie Dominick, mandolin: Miss Carrie Pool, violin; Miss Myra Mower, violin; Miss Edna Hipp, pi ano; Mr. Charles Hallnman, piccolo.
