It is reported that no tickets to the democratic national convention. which meets in St. Louis on July 6. will be on salh. The delegates will be assigned three each. besides their own. for distribution. Judge Osceola Kyle. of Decat-tr. Ala.. has been appointed by Presi ,dent Roosevelt one of the federal judges of the Panama Canal Zone. Judge Kyle is a life-long southern democrat. The third annual summer school for the south opened at Knoxville on Tuesday and will continue through to August 15. The aggre gate attendance is expected to reach 1,500 to 2.ooo. Among the lecturers for this week is President Snyder. of Wofford college. The Middle Atlantic States Bill -Posters and Distributors' association 'was organized at Richmond. Va.. on Monday. There were 22 delegates present. representing more than one hundred citie- in six states, including North and South Carolina. Thieves in Houston, Texas, on Monday night exploded a piece of dynamite under a poker table. created a panic among the crowd. and during the excitement stole between $1.200 and $1,500 out of the drawer. No one was hurt. H. J. Middleton. the Associated Press correspondent with the Rus sian headquarters near Liao Yang. in Manchuria, died on Sunday from en ternic dysentery. He was a vivid des criptive writer, a linguist, a student. and one of the best posted of men on international affairs. The gas bag of the Santos Du mount's airship, in the World's Fair grounds, St. Louis, in which he was to have made an ascension on July 4, was cut and slashed on Tues day night so as to preclude all pos sibility of its being repaired in time to make the ascension. Senator Gorman, of Maryland, has made a statement emphatically deny ing that he has entered into a com bination for the defeat of Parker. It has been stated on good authority that Mr. Gorman's name will not be presented to the St. Louis conven tion. Gage county, in south-west Ne braska, was swept by a severe hail storm on Tuesday afternoon. Two children near Homesville yere killed. Hail stones twelve inches in size and weighing eight ounces were picked up. The losses in live stock and or chard crop are heavy. The coroner's jury imnestigating the Slocum disaster has held the owners of the steamboat and the of ficers criminally responsible. The charge in each case was manslaugh ter in the second degree. Bail was fixed by the coroner in amounts varying from $1,ooo to $5,ooo Dan Emmett, the old time minstrel and famous as the composer of "Dixie," died at his home at Mt. Ver non, Ohio, on Tuesday. He was 86 years old. His last public appear ance was made four years ago, when he toured the states with a minstrel company. Miss Pauline Edwards, of Dan ville, Va., was found drowned in a creek near her home on Tuesday afternoon. Indications point to mnur der, and it is believed by many that the girl was assaulted and then her head held tinder the water until she was drowned. The girl was the belle of her- neighborhood. The explosion of a small bundle of fireworks which was being wrap ped up for a customer in the store room of the Diamond Fire-works company, in Philadelphia, on Monday ignited the room full of nirewvorks and three persons were killed and a half dozen others were injured. The cause of the fireworks exploding is not known. Judge George Gray, of Dalaware, has expressed the hope that former President Grover Cleveland wvill be nominated for the presidency by the St. Louis convention. Next to Cleve land he favors Judge Parker for the nomination. Rev. Dr. Len G. Proughton. of At lanta. and Chief of Police R. W. Westbrook. of Albany. engaged in a personal dihi, -ty in Albany on Mon day afternoos. the preacher being at tacked by the chief of police on ac count of charges preferred against Westbrook by Broughtoin in a ser mon on Sunday afternoon. Brough ton charged that WestbTook was a drunkard. and that he could be found at all hours in the lowest dives in the city. Friends of Broughton in terfered and hatiled Westbrook off him. The affair created a great sen sation. Charles A. Gutke. of St. Louis, for mier member of the house of dele gates. convicted on a charge of bri bery and soon to be tried on another similiar charge. has made a confes sion to the circuit attorney in which he describes a "combine" of which he was a member and which has extract ed thousands annually for many years from many corporations who wanted votes in the house of dele gates. He says there is hardly a corporation in the city, of St. Louis of $250,ooo and over that has not either been held up for bribe money or bought official action from the combine in the house of delegates. Clark. of Co lumbia. was chosen president. Lewis Flowers and Sampson Brown. two white men who lived near Mtllins, engaged in a difficulty on last Friday afternoon in which Brown shot Flowers. 5Flowers lived until Saturday afternoon. State constables raided 'n the Dark Corner oi Greenville county on Mon day. destroying three big illicit dis tilleries and .0oo gallons of still beer. The dead body of James Horsey, a 16-year-old boy, was found in a mill pond at \\'innsboro. It is sup posed that he wvas drowned while in bathing by himself the night befor.e. The big boiler in the lumber mill of M. Murdough, near Brunson, ex plo'ded on Monday. -completely wrecking the building and destroying all surrounding machinery. The workmen in the mill had not yet assembled, it being very early in the morning, and no one was hurt. He was riding alone in a buggy when some one crept up from be hind and dealt him a knock-out blow with a piece of iron. He was reliev ed of about $25 and a gold watch. The horse went on to the city and led to th discovery of Dr. Thomas. i(who was painfully though not ser i"usly injured. The county democratic executive committee of Laurens has adopted a resolution that it is the sense of the committee that no person who has directly or indirectly aligned himself with . the republican party should be allowed to participate in the democratic primary election in any wav: and the committee warns the democratic voters of the county that I no person who has so aligned hiinself by accepting favors at the hands of the republicans or otherwise should be countenanced in the councils of the democratic party. It is seldom that a hostipal sur geon is at a loss to answer patients, but one of the best known operators in this city was completely taken aback recently, says the Philadelphia Press. The patient, with a leg so badly hurt that amputation had been decid ed on, had excited the interest of the surgeon because of the peculiarity of the complaint. He brought a couple of surgical friends into the ward to see the case, and, as he approachea the cot remarked: "Well how are-you today?"
