Married by a Woman.
Chicago Tribune.
"While it is true that a few of my
friends know o' my having officiated
at a marriage ceremony-since 1
never (id it on the housetops-a few
(iet weddings at which I officiated
should be noted perhaps to a mildly
.i.sprove the usually. acctpted preju
(lice against women acting in that ca
pacity." says Mrs. Vandelia Thomas,
wile of Dr. \\. H. Thomas. of the
People's church. who is herself an or
dained minister.
Mrs. Thomas has had a number ofi
.:sn6 -,xp.7inc-s in tying the knot
for members of her husband's congre
gation. with the amusement not en
tirely on her side either. Of her first
call to officiate in uniting a loving
couple she says: "The Wednesday
after the Sabbath I was ordained a
party came to the house, asking if I
would perform the service for them
the next day.
'Oh no.' I said. quite out of my
breath. 'I could nut think of it. but
Dr. . he will.'
"They said they had listened to Dr.
Thomas preach. lo. these many years:
they loved him: he was al! right-i.
e.. just as right as a man could be
but they wished a woman to make
them one for life. and wouldn't I
please consent?
'Of course. she will," interposed
the head of the house. forgetting that
I had no service prepared and was
too proud to use his or any other bor
rowed affair-and was altogether too
green to undertake such a solemn
ceremony.
"'But I really do not know enough.'
I said in humiliation.
'Who would know the difference?
said the young woman. pleadingly.
It's our first time, too. and it would.
be all the same to us.'
"At last a compromise was agreed
upon that I would help and my name
would take its place with the doctor's
on license and certificate."
The next time Mrs. Thomas was
called upon by Cupid's followers came
almost unexpectedly.
"Some friends of ours on the west
side," she says. "had engaged Dr.
Thomas for the occasion. He was
taken ill that day. The night was
bitter cold. He could not go. that was:
all. as he had me bundled into a car
riage to face-what. I did not know
I was prepared, but would they be
prepared to receive me? The ride
was all too short and long. What
would be my fate? At last I reached
the place. The best man met me and
seemed confused, and so was some
one else. I hoped they had no dog.
At the inner door I came face to face
with the victimized couple. and, to
my surprise, was greeted in true St.
Paul fashion by both. I did not
know whether this was the usual cus
tom or not. but somehow it let me
down easily. and then came the con-I
fession that it was I whom they went
ed all the time. They were sorry for
the sickness, but so glad. etc.-all of
which I took with many grains of
salt. 'I have since learned that bride'
and bridegroom are about the easiest
people on earth to please: the super
abundant happiness gives little room
for aught else.
"'Did you give the bride your first
fee?' was the query upon reaching
home. Again I had to confess my ig
norance as to customs. but I tucked
it into the associated charities as a
bit of conscience money that I did not
care to keep.
"At another time came the query
over the telephone i Dr. Thomas was
Sat home. On my replying that he~
would not be for two hours and ask
ing if I could do anything for the in
quirer. there was a side talk. which
I overheard.
"'She can-what do you say? I'll
--all-right.' The next came to me.
' Say. Mrs. Thomas. this is a r:ar
riage. and we want it quick. Don't'
you sometimes tie people together?
"'Yes, if they wish, but I'm sure
he will'
"'We can't wait. This is - street.
We'll jump into a carriage and be
there in twenty minutes if you will
do the job.'
"The next time was a call direct to
me. a pretty home wedding. But
by that time it had become something
of an old story. I only remember
that the bride assured me at once that
'obey' was not to be spoken in that
service. to which the bridegroom
heartily assented. as they usually do
to everything at such a time.
"As yet, however, most people pre
fer a man.' she concluded. 'and the
supply seems to be .quite sufficient
