WOMEN'S FEDERATED CLUBS. Adjournment Reached on Friday Morning-The Election Of Officers. The annual convention of the Fed eration of Women's Clubs reached ad jourument Friday morning after the election (i officers and.the heads of the various departments. choosing Union as the place of next meeting and adopting resolutions of thanks. The Officers The following officers were chosen to serve for the ensuing year: President-Mrs. W. K. Sligh. of Newberry. First Vice-president-Mrs. A. F. McKissick. of Greenwood. Second Vice-president-Mrs. L. T. I Nichols. of Chester. Recording Secretary-Mrs. J. M. Vis'anska. of Charleston. Corresponding Secretary--Mrs. An drew C. Moore. of Columbia. Treasurer-Miss Varina Brown. of Anderson. Auditor-'Mrs. ,T. Fraser James. of Darlington. Immediately after the election the officers were called forward and in stalled in their respec.tive offices. Mrs. President Sligh. The new president. Mrs. W. K. Sligh. was greeted with hearty ap plause. In a graceful address she thanked the Federation for the honor conferred upon her. and bespoke the cooperation of all the clubs in the work of the ensuing year. Union Chosen. It was decided unanimously to ac cept an invitation from the clubs of Union to hold the next annual meet ing in that city. Board of Directors. Following the adjournment of the convention, a meeting of the board of directors was held. This meeting was for the purpose of electing heads for the different departments of the Fed eration. The result of the election was as follows: Heads of Departments. For the department of Education. Miss Anadora Baer, of Charleston. For the Kindergarten department, Miss M. E. Klinck. of Greenville. For the Library department, Mrs. M. P. Gridley, of Greenville. For the department of Arts. Mrs. A. G. Brice, of Chester. For the department of Music. Mrs. J. R. Vandiver, of Anderson. For the department of Forestry and Civics. Miss Mary E. Waterhouse, of Beaufort. For the department of Domestic Science. Mrs. J. T. Calvert. of Spar tanburg. For the department of Arts .and Crafts , Mrs. R. H. Jennings. of Orangeburg. For the department of Reciprocity, Miss Mary Poppenheim, of Charles ton. Resolutions of Thanks. The following resolutions of thanks were unanimously adopted. Whereas, the Women's Clubs of South Carolina assembled here have been the recipients of great kindness and hospitality: be it *Resolved, That our sincere thanks and appreciation be extended as fol lows: First. to the clubs and citizens of Newberry for a ver'y cordial welcome and hospitable- entertainment during 'fur stay in the city. Second. to all local committees, not forgetting /the committee of gentle ment. for perfecting arrangements *conductive to the comfort and con venience of the Federation. Third, to those ladies not allied with the clubs, for their generous hos pitality extended to the.Federation. Fourth. to Newberry college for its commodious and comfortable hall. Fifth, to Dr. Cromer for his bright and interesting address. Sixth, to Mrs. Means for her kind and helpful suggestions. Seventh, to the committee on art and music for a delightful program on WVec'nesday evening and to all mu-I s-ians -who participated. Eighth, to the young lady pages who have served us, with tempting luches, and have been most courteous in all their attentions. Ninth, to the local and state news papers for full reports of .proceedings. Tenth, to the railroads for granting lower rates to the Federation than before given. Eleventh, to the reception commit tee for the thoroughly enjoyable re ceptions held on Tuesday and Thurs M rs. Pelham. which appeared I in a recent issue of the Newberry I Telegram, citing authentic facts of history in proof that President An- t drew Jackson was born in South Car- I nlina. will be of interest to the readers of The Herald and News: * Editor The Telegram: In a recent I issue you copy from the Augusta ( Chronicle an article that purports to c g ive the birth-place of the presidents f of the United States and which states i that President Andre,v Jackson was c a native of North Carolina. t This reminds me of my visit to J New Orleans. five years ago. in at- 5 tendance as commissioner to the f General Assembly of the Presbyter ian church, where I formed the ac quaintance of many pleasant and highly-cultured people, among them 1, clergymen. and elders of renown and distinction. A party of us having been invited by our courteous and at tentive friends of the Crescent* City s to visit the French qjarter (the old I east section of the city). we accepted with genuine pleasure and delight. and away we went visiting here and t there quaint and antique spots. ever . and anon in admiration of buildings- a and sites that carried us in mental vis ioi to scenes of greatest gaiety and splendor so characteristic of the wealthy and chivalric Creole life of the long ago. But it is to Jackson square iat I I would invite the reader, where stands a magnificient equestrian statue of South Carolina's illustrious citizen. who graced the president's chair. By all of us the statue was admired, but I doubt by any of our coterie so much as I, who with hat removed, proudly remarked, "I doff my chapean to South Carolina's noble son, Presi dent Jackson." Iagine my surprise, I Mr. Editor, when several voices were raised in protest, some elaiming North Carolina, while others Tennes see as the birth-place of Jackson. It was my happy privilege t'o act critic and historian on that occasion, as it C ow becomes me in referring to the lipping in your recent issue. In Dr. owe's History of the Presbyterian Church of S. C.. Vol. 1., p 539, are to e found these words: "It was in the - walls of Old Waxhaw church (Lan aster Co:) that Mrs. Jackson present ed her son Andrew to God in baptism ad took him from Sabbath to Sab ath. in hope- that some day he would be a preacher of the gospel." and further on Dr. Howe relates a visit f Mrs Jackson, accompanied by I rs. Dunlap. to Charleston to see er son '(Andrew), then a prisoner aboard the prison ship. And [ add that he tells also of her death at the Quarter House, six miles this side of Charleston, having taken fever on her return journey, and of ther facts of thrilling interest. which, however, are not pertinent to this article. If fturther testimony to the birth place of Jackson is needed, reference may be made to the "History of South Carolina under the Royal Govern ment." by Gen. Edward McCrady, p. 36: "Among the Scotch-Irish who came down and settled in the WVax aw~ around the old chtirch were the Jacksons. Calhouns, and Pickens. Andrew Jackson was born there." I General McCrady also refers to the long line of patroits and distinguished men who were brought up in connec tion with the old Waxhaw church. General Andrew Pickens. Hon. WVm. I H. Crawford. Gov?. Stephen D. Mil ler. Gov. Win. R. Davie. Hon. Pat rik Calroun. Dr. J. Marion Sims, the Dunlaps, the Witherspoons, and tals of South Carolina. and nearly all if tle southern states as weil. Parton. the historian of President ack-ion. refers to his (Jackson's) oft xpressed wish t, visit the place ehere he was born. and the old hurch of his native state where rest he remains of his father, and broth rs and others. And that all controversey may end, et me refer also to President Jack on's letter to Col. James H. Wither poon (my great grandfather on my nother's side) in which he speaks of imself as a "former citizen of Lancas er. as interested in the prosperity of ,ld Waxhaw." and his desire to "visit he sacred spot which holds the re riains of father and brothers."
