GENFRAL NEWS NOTES. Items of More or Less Interest Con - densed Outside the State. A terrible hurricane visited San tiago, Cuba. last week. Forty-five persons are known to have been kill ed and others were reported missing. The entire business section of the town of Norton, Wise county, Va., was destroyed by fire on last Vednes day night, causing a loss of about $i5o.ooo, partially insured. The Norfolk and Western railway has authorized the issuance of $35, ooo,ooo gold bonds for the purpose of laying double tracks and making numerous other improvements. Justice Gaynor. of the supreme court of New York. sitting as a mag istrate in Brooklyn, has handed down an opinion in. which he holds that ganies of professional baseball are illegal on Sunday. N Rev. Decatur Edwards. pastor of the Falmouth Baptist church, of Fredericksburg. Va.. while shooting at cats in his back yard. accidentally shot and mortally wounded Mrs. Lucy Mann. who was standing on her back porch, on adjoining premises. Maj. H. M. Folsom. of Elizabeth town, Tenn.. one of the oldest and best known men in that se'tion of the state, fell over a cliff a distance of ioo feet, sustaining injuries which will probably prove- fatal. No one was with him and he lay at the bot tom of the cliff for several hours. ' One of the big automobiles used to .ake sight-seers about the city of New York ran over and killed an -el derly unknown man on Thursday night. Before the body of the victim could be taken from under the car several of the women passenger* be came hysterical and had to be lifted to the ground, while others jumped down and ran away from the scene. A theatre panic that might have been terrible in its results was nar rowly averted in a theatre in Ameri cus, Ga., on Friday night. While the theatre was packed with twelve hundred people, principally children, the fire alarm was sounded. Efforts of police and teachers upon the stage were unavailing until the orchestra, it is reported, "with wonderful inspir ation, struck up Dixie. This served to restote quiet." Masked men held up a Northern Pacific passenger train ijear Bear Mouth. Montana, on Friday night. They dynamited the express car, blew open the safe and secured its con tents. - The amount secured is re ported to be $65,ooo, though this is denied by the railroad officials. Af ter blowing out the rear lights of the train the men disappeared. The hold ups boarded the tender of the engine at the water tank at Bear Mouth and remained quiet until the train had gone a mile and a half, .when they held it up. Charles S. McCoy, a prominent at torney of Chicago, committed suicide in Jacksonvlle, Fla., on Friday morn ing, by cutting his throat with a razor while in 'a bath tub at a hotel there. It is said that he had lost $xo,ooo in the last several days specu lating. |He was in Jacksonville look ing after a suit. He left a note to the lawyer associated with him in the suit, in which he stated that the demon of speculation had him in its grip, and while he knew that suicide was cowardly, yet he believed the course which he was taking was a wise one un-'r the circumstances. Second Lieutenant Reginald R. Hogan, stationed at Annapolis. is to be courtmartialed for a recent es capade at Annapolis. According to a report made to the navy depart ment, while returning to his quarters fr~om an entertainment with some other officers about midnight he took a party of sailors to task for an al leged failure to salute him properly on the street. When a negro who was passing said the sailors hadn't done anything wrong, the officer .promptly knocked him down, and was placed under arrest after a struggle. An, Anderson report says that Gen eral Stephen D. Lee, who has just been elected commander-in-chief of the United Confederate Veterans, is a native of Anderson county. He was born near what is now known as Iva. His father. Dr. Thomas Lee, was a prominent citizen in his day. The *family lived at Abbeville for a num SOUTH CAROLINA NEWS. Sternberger Company's store at Clio was burned on Thurs day night. and property destrnoyed to the extent of about $3o.ooo. A commission has been granted for an ice plant in Orangeburg. and it is understood that a second plant is to be built in the near future. Since the withdrawal of Congress man Scarborough from the race for re-election in the Sixth district, a number of candidates have entered the race. Hon. 1. H. McCalla. --f Lowndes ville. has announced himself a candi date for congress from the Third dis trict. in opposition to the present in cumbent. Hon. Wyatt Aiken. It is reported from Anderson that news has been received there of a proposed power plant to be construct ed on the Savannah river at some place near Calhoun Falls. The Anderson Spool and Bobbin fa tory. in Charleston. was , almost entirely destroyed by fire on Satur day afternoon. The loss will aggre gate $io.ooo. Bryan & Bryan. attorneys, of Char leston, have entered suit against the Southern Bell Telephone company for $2,ooo for failure to repair their 'phone for a period of five days last December. Governor Heyward has pardoned Ike Jones. of Greenwood county, who was convicted four years ago and who has served practically all his time in the penitentiary. Governor Heyward granted the pardon for good services. State Treasurer Jennings returned last week from New York, where he borrowed $3oo,ooo more to meet the expenses of the state government. This, in addition to the $200,ooo pre viously borrowed to pay the pension claims, makes $5oo,ooo which the state has recently borrowed. George Williams was shot by Ed ward Stringfield on a farm near Aiken on last Wednesday afternoon. Both of the parties are white men, and they got into a dispute over some matter that is not definitely known. Stringfield has a wife and several children and Williams is a single man.. Williams was not expected to live. Robert P. Tucker, of Charleston, has entered suit against the Southern railway for $2,ooo damages for fail ure of one of its trains to get him to Gainesville. Ga.. on time, causing him to lose three days N-om his bus iness and incur other m.~itional ex pense. Mr. P. T. Lemaster, town marshall at Glendale. in Spartanburg county, was shot and slightly wounded on Thursday .evening by a white man named Robin Thomas. who had been discharged from work at the Glendale mill. It seems that the town marshal had previously interfered in a dispute which Lemaster had with the mill overseer. Nathan Truesdale, an uncle of the negro killed-at Cloud's creek in Saluda county several days ago. swore out a warrant last week for Sion Miller, Joe Miller, and Russell McCormick, all white. The young men went to Saluda and surrindered themselves to the sheriff and were placed- in jail. The older of the Miller boys is mar ried. The Highlander. the steamboat op erated on the Congaree between Co lumbia and Georgetown, was destroy ed by fire when about twenty-five miles out of Georgetown. The boat was insured at $3,500. and the loss is estimated at about $12,ooo. Co lumbia seems de'termined to have an other boat and arrangements are be ing made looking towards securing While Deputy Sheriff Ballenger, of Greenville, was returning from Salis bury. N. C.. bringing with him Robert Bird. wanted at Fountain Inn for murder, the negro jumped from the window while the train was near Blacksburg and running 30 miles an hour. Ballenger rushed to the plat form and leaped off in pursuit of the negro. whom he found lying on an embankment badly crippled. Bal lenger's only injury was a sprained ankle. The train backed up and got ENDORSED BY HIS COUNTY W. Boyd Evans the Favorite of the Democracy of Marion. The Marion county democratic convention adopted the following res ulutions unanimously: "Whereas, W. Boyd Evans is a can didate for railroad commissioner. Re solved, That we. the democracy of Marion county. in convention assem bled, endorse his candidacy and com mend him to the voters of the state i one qualified to perform the duties Df the office with credit to himself nd fidelity to the state." The democratic voters of Kirby ownship in Marion county where Mr. Evans. now a lawyer of Columbia. as born, passed the following: "Whereas, W. Boyd Evans is an ounced as a candidate for railroad :ommi-ssioner: and. whereas. we. the democratic voters of the township in which he was born and reared, know int him to be qualified in every par ticulT- to fill the office to which he aspires with credit to himself and [ionor to the state: therefore, be it "Resolved. That we, the democratic voters of Kirby township, in meeting assembled, do endorse his candidacy, and instruct the delegates elected to the county convention to offer suita ble resolutions commending him to the citizens of this state for their sup port."
