Congressman Lever says in an in terview with the Evening Telegram when in Newberry the other day that he.was an original Parker man for the democratic nomination for the pres idency. and that none of the South Carolina members in Congress were ever for Hearst. We believe South Carolina favors Parker. but does so because it is supposed he is the most available man for the place and the one most likely to win. provided of course he is a good democrat. Mr. Parker has that record. though there are some good people even in South Carolina who are not enthusiastic Parker men because they think Mr. Parker is too near Cleveland and they do not endorse Mr. Cleveland. We do not share in that opinion because but. for the fact that Mr. Cleveland has been three times nominated and twice elected we should be glad to see him nominated. He is among the greatest living Americans today. The democratic party has its opportunity this year. There is only one thing to do and that is for all good democrats to unite on the nomminees and plat form and give their loyal support and victory will be the result. The commencement season is about over. The young men and young wo men all over this land who have fin ished will now step out on the larger arena of actual life. In this field con test the metal must stand its own test. If there is merit or genius and it is properly drected it will come to the front. As the world counts succe'ss the great majority fail of its attain ment. But there can be no failure if the true purpose of life is kept as the ideal to which you are striving to do good and serve, and make the world better by your having lived in The Small Farmer. What the state needs now more than any other one thing is to have the small farmer the owner of his own farm and no: -a tenant of the lar ger land owner. It makes better citi zens and arouses a greater love of country. When every man owns his own home- he has more reason to be! and is more interested in making it in reality a home. The greatest mence that could corne to our' institutions would be the land going into the hands of a few and the great mass of our people becoming tenants. The large land owners would do themselves a ser vice and also a service to their coun try if they would encourage the small farmer to become his own home own er and then further encourage him to make that home attractive ,and pleasant and in reality a home. This! will go a long way towards making *country life more attractive and de sirable and will stop that desire to move to town. The home owner, naturally, will be more interested in building up a good school in his com munity and having the advantages of the church. He will take a greater in terest in the building and irr.prove ment of the public roads. and these after all will have more to do with building up the community than any other one thing. Good roads. good schools, good churches in the country will all come when our farmers be come home owners, for then they will feel a personal interest in the perma nent upbuilding of the country. .Columbia has been selected for the encampment of the militia. Colum bia is a most delightful place and it is--.... plesnt there in the spring and fall but in the summer we should not select it as a place to spend a while. If the expense was the con ,ideration it would have saved more money not to have had an encamp ment at all. It is only about one week beiore the state campaign begins. So fai the only contest for state pffices is for railroad commissioner. In one or two of the congressional districts there will be opposition to the incumbents. The most interesting fight will be in the second district It is stz i on pretty good authority that in addition to the enries for the unexpired term of Congressman Croit. Gov. Jno. C. Sheppard will be in the race. Then it is said that MNr. T. G Croft does not feel under obligations to step aside for the long term inas much as the aspirants for the job did not give him a clear feld for the un expired term and the probability is he will be in the race for the full term It was announced in a dispatch from Washington yesterday that the navy deparment had been officially informed that the sultan of Moroccc had acceded to the demands of the banditti who holds Perdicaris, the American citizen. and Varley. the En glish subject. and that it was probable that Perdicaris would soon be re leased. It was stated that the ransom demanded by the leader of the ban ditti was believed to be fifty thousand dollars. This is rather hard on the sultan, but if he isn't able to govern the country he must pay he price. THE PERDICARIS AFFAIR. Reported That The Sultan Has Come To Bandits' Terms and Perdi- - caris Will be Released. Washington, June 9.-The sultan of Morocco has acceded to all the demands of Raisuli, the captor of Perdicaris*and of Varley. Official information to this effect was receivtd at the navy department this morning irom Admiral Chadwick. The di9patch reads: "Minister of foreign affairs has in structions from Fez acceding to all demands of Raisuli." This means that Raisuli if he fulfills his promises, will release the two prisoners as soon as the ransom is paid. The ransom is believed to be about -iftv thousand dollars.
