THE SUWANEE RIVER.
Familiar Negro Melody Refers to the
Upper Portion of the Stream.
Mr. Stovall. of the Savannah Press.
pays a two-column tribute to the
Suwanee River. in the course of which
he says:
"One of the best known streams
in the South is the Suwanee river.
made so by the song: but in reality
few people have ever seen it and very
few have explored it * * * 'Way Down
Upon the Suwanee River' was written
way up on the Suwanee. if legand is
true. - There the river is narrow and
commonplace. with nothing to com
mend it but its'name. It is a negro
lullaby-a noble precursor of mod-:
ern rag-time-which Neilson and Pat-1
ti and Melba and Nordica have war
bled and which has furnished a break
and an encore in classical concerts
for generations.
"But the lower river, the real Suw
anee. with its chromes and currents.:
its palms and cypresd. its fringe of
and itsunfailing setting of green-is
and its unfailing setting of gree--is
deserving of something more than a
coon song. It is worth an epic of
depth and dignity. Nature did not
set things to rag-time when she dug
this river. It is to6 graceful and no
ble."
That is all pretty and more. but
the'truth of history is that the Suwa
nee river which inspired the famous
song is located way up in Kentucky.
and not in Florida. replies the Ma
con (Ga.) Telegraph.
.All the other things said about the
Florida Suwanee, which has . its
source in Georgia-the Okeninokee
Swamp-are true. In addition, how
ever, to the main source in the great
Georgia swamp, the Suwanee has]
tributaries from this stare in the!
Withlacooche river, the Alapaha riv
er, and the Swanoochee creek. The
Suwanee is very much of a Georgia
enterprise, drawing from the water
sheds in Charlton. Ware. Clinch.
Echols. Lowndes. B rooks. Col quit.
Berrien. Worth, Irwin. Dooly and
slightly from several other South
Georgia counties. It and its tribu
taries are also fed by a large nuimber
of great springs which may draw~
from the middle and moumairt. reg
ions of Georgia.
But to get the best there i- . 'rt of
the far-famed Suwanee one mustr
strike it wvith pole and hook gear its
main source in the QkenS.:k>r

A bright girl asked to be absent
