Deserved Promotion.
The i ierald and Ne %%s with
pleasure the promiotion of two ver'
efficient officials of the Southern rail
way, Mr. S. H. Hardwick. frumni 4he
position of general passenger agent
to that of traffic passenger manager
to suceed the late W. A. Turk. and
that of Mr. W.: H. Tayloe. from as
sistan; passenger agent to that of
general passenger agent. to succeed
Mr. Hardwick. The only regret we
would express is that this change re
moves Mr. Tayloe from among us
and takes him to Washington. and it
we should exprets that regret it
would be selfish. Mr. Tayloe has
made many friends in this section.
as had Mr. Hardwick before he left
us. We felt the same way when Mr.
Hardwick left. but in Mr. Tayloe he
had a worthy successor, and we shall
hope in Mr. Brooks Morgan that he
will fill the bill as has Mr. Tayloc.
We congratulate the Southern rail
way in their having such efficient of
ficials and in recognizing it by their
promotion. They do not get above
'the people. Then they are southern
gentlenen. and these are the men
we like to see promoted. We wish
them much success in their new posi
tions.
John Sharp Williams. of Missis
sippi. the minority leader on the
floor of the house. strongly endorses
Judge Alton B. Parker. of New York.
for the democratic nomination for
president. Democratic sentiment is
fast crystallizing in favor of Mr. Par
ker and from present indications he
will without doubt be nominated with
out serious opposition. Mr. Williams
has himself been mentioned in con
nection with th presidential nom
ination. but he says he has not taken
this talk seriously. Mr. Williams
has shown a great deal of true states
manship in his trying 'position as
minority leader in the house and is
-odax one of the strongest in the
party.
It looks now that Newberry coun
tv is to have lve new oil mills built
this year. One at Newberry. one at
Chappells. one at Kinards. one at
Pomaria and one by Mr. Robt. L.
Schvmpert. The Newberry. Chappells
and Pomaria enterprises have already
secured the capital stock desired and
work will be commenced soon. The
Smith Bros. will in all prohability be
gin work soon at Kinards and we un
derst.,.nd Mr. Schumpert will erect
one in connection with his roller mill
and ginnery.
There is no reason why all of them
should no.t be successful. The farmers
grow the seed and are interested in
all of them. They should stick to
these independent mills and then they
could reap the benefit.
The Hearst presidential boom seems
* to be dying. It will be buried by the
St. Louis convention.
A WISE PIG.
It Took a Calfs Place, Lived on Milk,
And Outgrew Its Companion
2 to I.
Mr. A. L. Whitman, of the St.
Lukes section of the county, was in
Newberry this week and told of a
woniderful pig which he has on his
place. It is a strange story, and
probably without parallel, but Mr.
Whitman vouches for it and has the
pig at home to prove it.
About two weeks ago a calf was
born unto one of Mr. Whitman's
cows. This -calf' was like any other
calf and is yet like any other calf.
calf that the strange part of the story
cones in. In the lot with the cali
and its mother were two pIcgs. vtoung

for. M\r. \iitnan put the two things
together and still could not make any
thing out of it. One day this week.
he says, he walked into the lot and
beheld as strange a sight as he ever
saw. and the myst.y was solved. The
fat pig was s-ucking the cow.
Mr. Whitman says that one f ] his
pigs now weighs sixty pounds. The
other weighs thirty.
