R~. H. AULL, EDITOR. FRIDAY, APRIL 29, 1904. A Correction. In the mention in The Herald and News Tuesday of the Dutch Fork I and the Irish of No. 9 it was stated; that Capt. Matthew Hall had married Miss Polly Schumpert. and Mr. Geo. Dominick, Miss Sallie Hunter. The, authority for this statement is the Annals of Newberry. In fact the statement was substantially taken from an article dictated by Esquire P. -W. Counts and is found in the Annals at pages 554 and 555. We are informed by Capt. R. '1. C. Hunter that this is not correct 'istory. That Capt. Matthew Hall stole for his Dutch wife. not ' Miss Polly Schumpert. but Miss Polly Fel lers. who was an aunt of Capt. Jn6. B. Fellers. oi Prosperity, and was a 'relative of Messrs. Geo. E. and A. H. Hawkins of Prosperity. That Mr. Geo. Dominick. in crossing the dead line did not capture Miss Sallie Hun ter, but her sister, Miss Nannie Hun ter, and that she is the mother *of Mr. J. Chesley Dominick, of Newber ry., and Mr. B. L. Dominick, or the Dead Fall section, and she is still living. It is well that this part of the Annals was quoted so tlie correction may be made while there are those living who know the facts. It does not change the other facts stated, that these are good and honest and thrifty citizens. In a Memorial day speech in Atlan ta on Tuesday Judge John W. Atkin suggested that the date for Memorial day in Georgia be changed from the 26th of April to June 3. the anniver sary of the birthday of President Jefferson Davis. The suggestion wa: received with favor by Judge Atkins' audience, as was evidenced by the #loud applause which it provoked. If Georgia is to make a change why not change to the toth of May. the day set apart by South Carolina for this purpose? The date ought to be made as near the same in all the southern states as local conditions will permit. Jhe county conkention will meet in the court house on Monday. There is a general good ieeling prevailing among the democrats of Newberry county and there will be no contests ithe convention and there will be very few.-if any questions for discus sion. About the onily business will be the election of'- delegates to the state. convention. a state executive committeeman, and a county chair man. WVe hope to see a full attend ance of the delegates from the various clubs. After a hard light President Roose velt has again failed in his efforts to have Crum's nomination confirm ed at this session oif the senate. WVash ington dispaches say that the pres ident. in his self-assumed role of dic tator. wvent so tar as to'lbreaten the senate with an extra session -hou!d the nominlation not be conlirmed. But the old senatorial dlignity ase.r'ted it self iin some degree. at leait. and it was no go. And the nominaion wil come up for coni rmnation at the.li net sesson. The Florida Times-Union says that General Miles has the conisolationl of knowing that if he makes the racej ior president on the prohibition tick-. et he wvill not have to buy drinks ior the crowd. That makes him a loser: Greenville News. And not only on the prohibition ticket, but the liquor ticket, the denm ocratic ticket, the republican -cket, or any other old ticket.
